How long did Malick get Gosling to haul cement for? There's a moment where some guy comes up and chastises him for being too slow, that he'll be replaced if he can't keep up. I wonder if that was scripted, or if Gosling really couldn't keep up.

I doubt any of them took millions, probably closer to pennies like Sean Penn. Unless by "million dollar" you mean young, attractive A-lists. Although Gosling is coming up on 40.
