Seth MacFarlane doesnt have as much to with it as with Family Guy

Because the jokes generally at least try to emerge organically from the plot rather than being jammed in at random intervals like in Family Guy.

Family Guy became really mean-spirited and uncomfortable. American Dad still manages to have touching moments and you can tell the family love each other, whereas Family Guy is all about a family that hates one another and domestic violence.
