We have the most amazing special effects right now, we can do jaw dropping lighting and camera angles never thought possible, but its all fucking wasted on shit designs, just look at how amazing this 80s scifi aesthetic is compared to some crap now like transformers or whatever forgetable scifi film comes out next month

The reason the old practical effects are better is that the models have to actually be built. The designers really had to consider weight, stress points, inertia if they were moving the things around.
Slapping everything into a computer means that all they need to do is make something look cool, they miss all of that expertise that goes into making a model look 'real'.
