What do you guys think of Metropolis (1927)?
>>84131706
We only watch capeshit and BLACKEDI actually feel bad for not having watched such an influential kino yet
I saw the cut after they found a bunch of lost footage in the theater and it's really interesting but I found it very difficult to follow, even with the explanations for the missing scenes that they added during the film. Definitely a tragedy that we don't have a full pristine copy of this film, it's unique.

Tough watch in terms of patience, but obvious why it's lauded as a landmark in filmmaking.
If you read up on the 1920s Weimar fear of the "new woman" with more power (voting, etc.) and short hair, the "vamp" is a neat figure to look at with that in mind.
I just wish they hadn't lost the original footage and had to cobble the version we have together from bits and pieces...I heard recently they found new footage but I haven't seen the newest cut.

I watched the anime remake as a little kid and loved it. There's no decent r34 of Tima and it makes me want to fucking kill myself.
>>84131706
what really blew me away was the depictions of computers and video calling. it's a classic.
>>84132175
>anime remake
Even wikipedia is smarter than you.
>>84131706
Boring but I haven't watched it since I was like 14 and my taste has changed since then.
what director should remake it? blade runner came closest
>>84132515
Modern Times also has video calling in it.
fantastic
>>84133005
>blade runner came closest
I'm not 100% on that. Blade Runner and Metropolis are dramatically different.
>remake
Gross. But Alex Proyas did good with Dark City.
>everything since has been trash, just like Ridley Scott
I don't think Denis Villeneuve could do it either. Mamoru Oshii is still alive though. I don't think he's senile just yet.
>>84131706
It's pretty good. There are a few bits where it drags a bit like yeah I get the point you don't NEED to have a 20 minute dancing scene
80s restoration is the best version.
I fell in love.
I fell asleep during it
aged like diet milk
>>84132630
Well, not really a remake so much as an adaptation, but that's just semantics.
>>84134202
Sharing a name, visuals, and dramatically repurposing a character does not a remake/adaptation make.
It's 95% another movie.
>>84131706
A masterpiece.
Love it. My favorite silent movie. Pretty much excels in everything it tries to do.
>>84131750
I thought it was easier to follow after the found footage. The guy following the main character around actually has somewhat of a plot arc instead of just appearing in random places and some important connecting scenes are restored.
>>84131706
Interesting to see the genesis of all the killer robot tropes that are still going on today almost a century later.
>>84131867
I feel like every few years I hear about some new footage found for it, but I remember having a hard enough time making it through the shorter versions despite enjoying it
>>84131706
One of my favorite movies. Supremely entertaining.
>>84131867
You need to see the Kino restoration. It's an amazing film.
>>84135387
The 2010 restoration, which I'm guessing is the one he's talking about, is a half hour longer than the 2002 version, at 148 minutes. We're still missing about 5 minutes but some of that is explained in intertitles made to fill in the gaps.

Sheeeit, these movies were made even before TV.

Obligatory. Actually how I found out about Metropolis in the first place.
Dope
>>84135447
As I understand it part of the problem was that there were different cuts of the film showing when it was new
>>84135561
The American version had a lot of scenes cut out because the studios wanted the movie to be shorter. The recent Kino Lorber restoration is about as faithful to the original German version as we'll probably ever see.

it's my favorite disney movie
I live near the place where they shot the film and some of my relatives actually worked on the movie, so I like it very much.
I would so love to see a old school noir/detective film that takes place in the same style of world as the one in metropolis. It would be top kino. I think lars von trier would be a good director for it.
