Kubrick's EWS is riddled with symbology, even the colors mean something in scenes, everything in this movie has been placed to deliver a message, this is why the whole movie feels like a dream, it was done intentionally, basically she is subjected to MK Ultra, this is reinforced in a scene that was cut by the studio right before the movie open.
