>Phil Lord and Christopher Miller are no longer directing the Han Solo Star Wars spin-off.

>"Phil Lord and Christopher Miller are talented filmmakers who have assembled an incredible cast and crew, but it’s become clear that we had different creative visions on this film, and we’ve decided to part ways. A new director will be announced soon,” said Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm in a statement.

>“Unfortunately, our vision and process weren’t aligned with our partners on this project. We normally aren’t fans of the phrase ‘creative differences’ but for once this cliché is true. We are really proud of the amazing and world-class work of our cast and crew,” stated Phil Lord and Christopher Miller.

>Lord and Miller, the helmers of The LEGO Movie and 21 Jump Street and its sequel 22 Jump Street, signed on to direct the Star Wars stand-alone in July 2015. The film will star Alden Ehrenreich as Han Solo, while Emilia Clarke, Woody Harrelson and Donald Glover also star.

>The film has been shooting in London since January. The release date of May 25, 2018, remains unchanged.

Nobody wants this.

I don't care about this movie but how the fuck do they quit when the film has been shooting since February? It sounds like 90% of the film has been shot, are they completely gutting what has been shot and reshooting everything like those shitty "Exorcist" prequels in 2004? This is very bizarre. Has to kill a lot of hype people had for this.
>>
>>84123278
Didn't everyone love R1? People really want to see more Star Wars prequels that answer open questions of the original trilogy.

Holy shit. Usually directors leave BEFORE the start of production if there is creative differences. Director(s) leaving DURING the actual filming means something major must of happened between them and Disney.

I'm not sure why they've been shooting this film for nearly 4 months and just now decided to leave. These departures tend to happen early in pre-production, not halfway through principal photography.
>>
>>84123323
Lord and Miller are comedy directors. Probably ended up not liking the "muh serious" tone Disney wanted. Why they are leaving this far into shooting is extremely strange and raises a lot of flags.
>>
>>84123237
I'm smelling bitch cunt all over this. They probably were gearing towards a more serious film like Rogue One, but Kennedy and the Mouse crew want Guardians of the Galaxy: Star Wars edition and want to pander to fucking kids. I'd bail on that horseshit, too.

These two directors are completely retarded. They KNEW they weren't gonna have 100% control of their movie, right? The script (by Kasden, who wrote ESB and TFA) was finished. It wasn't the script. It wasn't the control. Then what was it? What could possibly come up in the FOUR MONTHS IN THE MIDDLE OF PRODUCTION that would make a director want to leave and look like that guy who directed Fantastic Four? Who's gonna hire them now? Those dummies are probably reading this thread right now like that other retard. "Creative differences"... from the highly planned production that you agreed to work on with the full knowledge of what was gonna happen? What a bunch of dopes. Good, there's no room for a white male directing star wars in 2017, let alone two at the same time
>>
As much as I'd like to blame feminism for this... I think there is a much more logical explanation;

The real blame here is the Lucasfilm "story group" run by asshat, beaner, and SJW Pablo Hildago, that has way, way too much story telling power and likely were trying to force Lord and Miller to shoehorn crap from the Marvel comics into the Han Solo film just so they can sell more shitty comics and books.

This is what happens when you let the people who played the Star Wars Roleplaying Game run Star Wars... they micromanage and kill the creativity of actually talented individuals.

Lucasfilm is hamstringing their directors to include shit from comics, books and Rebels. Directors hate it.

>The duo met about the possibility of directing “The Flash” after Rick Famuyiwa left the project over creative differences last year, according to multiple individuals familiar with the project. It was unclear whether they were already considering an exit from the “Han Solo” project.

Let's play a numbers game, shall we?

>TFA total global box office: $2.068 billion
>R1 total global box office: $1.056 billion

TFA didn't manage to depose Titanic or Avatar as the second or first highest-grossing film of all time. I suspect Disney really wanted it to be the first $3 billion movie, but that didn't materialise.

Although R1 was an "interquel" (fuck modern Hollywood to death), it still took less than Civil War ($1.153 billion total global box office), and Furious 8 ($1.237 billion total global box office) even with the Star Wars branding and a massive promotional push. It's my personal suspicion that if TLJ doesn't top $1.5 billion globally Disney execs are going to get nervous.

What does /tv/ predict the box office take for TLJ and Untitled Han Solo movie will be?

don't forget Gary Kurtz as well. Irvin Kershner also worked with a lot of the actors with the script on ESB, specifically Harrison Ford. There's a recording of one of their conversations in my copy of The Making of The Empire Strikes Back, I think it's for the scene before Han goes into carbonate.

Brian de Palma also deserves credit for telling George no one will want to read a 6 paragraph opening crawl and so he re-wrote it himself for George. As well as Marcia Lucas obviously.

Lucas is definitely an ideas man, but he works best when there's someone else to pick out the best ideas and keep them coherent, like Spielberg with Raiders and Kasden/Kurtz on ESB.

Kill yourself, George. The prequels are absolutely terrible. Attack of the Clones is a particularly awful trainwreck. Reminder:

>"Watch out for that vicious bounty hunter Boba Fett, Luke. Did I ever tell you I fought his dad? He was hired to assassinate a senator me and your father were guarding. We kept bringing her around open windows and public areas in order to draw the would-be assassin out because we knew he had too much pride to just shoot her from long range. He had used his payment to hire another bounty hunter to kill the senator for him while he sent us on a wild bantha chase. Also the 2nd assassin used her payment to buy a robot to assassinate the senator for her. Did I mention the 2nd assassin was a shapeshifter? She could have been a good friend in disguise and just shot the senator for all we knew! Then the robot used its payment to buy poisonous bugs to release into the senator's room while she slept after lasering a hole through the window. It could have just lasered her too after that because we we weren't watching her at all, but it already bought the bugs. So we sense the hostile life forms (not the robot) in the room and rush in and save the senator in the nick of time! Then I jumped out the window to chase the robot back to its owner! Luckily it didn't have a self-destruct function. Then we found the 2nd assassin and chased her across the planet, and caught her when she tried to kill us instead of shapeshifting and escaping. But to our surprise, Jango Fett was watching the whole thing instead of going to kill the senator while we were away chasing the bugs chasing the robot chasing the shapeshifter.

the film is partly for people who are new to Star Wars considering the generation gap. This was intended, as highlighted in every JJ interview. The film functions as both a soft reboot (for a new generation) and a continuation.

It's similar to a soap opera which is what George always intended it to be and Hamill and Ford (who obviously contributed a huge plot development) supported it. Kasdan also co-wrote it which trumps any bullshit point you have with it not being from an original creative source.

It's a solid strategy for a wider audience. you're just butthurt that they didn't make a special film just for your little snowflake sensibilities.

But that's not how Hollywood sees it. If each successive film doesn't make more than the last, it's basically a failure.
Remember Age of Ultron being marked as a "flop"? How about the Princess and the Frog?
When it comes to studios and franchises as gigantic as Star Wars, anything less than "better than last time" is a failure. It's a poor way of business, and one that's only contributing towards the inevitable decline of the Hollywood machine.

>Let me guess, you're the guy who bitches about how Han went back to being a Smuggler because it """ruins his character development""", yet bitch and moan his death was him sacrificing himself in an attempt to save his son's soul instead of being some hamfisted last stand where he kills 200 stormtroopers and yells "NEVER TELL ME THE ODDS" before blowing up starkiller base?

Problem is we don't know shit about his son or their relationship. So the fact they are related barely matters.

It's underdeveloped mess just like the rest of that movie. Flat characters doing random shit.

Nothing of importance was lost.

No it wasn't. George considered none of it canon.

yeah it's not like sexists constantly criticize Kathleen kennedy or Star Wars anym-OH WAIT that's exactly what people in this thread have been doing.

nice try.

George also does not consider TFA as part of his canon

For Lucasflim was canon

So you're not allowed to dislike anything made by a woman even if it's hot fucking garbage? The franchise was built from the ground up by a man btw, remember that

Probably because TFA grossed $2,068,223,624

>What does /tv/ predict the box office take for TLJ and Untitled Han Solo movie will be?

I dunno about SOLO, but TLJ will probably drop at least 25% from TFA. All Star Wars releases have huge opening with the first film and then drop. It'll be even worse this time around with superhero and Star Wars fatigue

I thought people's problem with AoU was that it was more ridiculous and less satisfying than the first one. Also, comic book fans hated Ultron's screen adaptation.

Personally, I liked it a lot. But that's what I heard

cant believe people actually defending disney itt

obviously they had issues with the pandering and market research metrics edits the team of 9000 disney board jews imposed on them

Fuck off, you Lucas apologists are the worst. Some mediocre Disney movies don't make the prequels good.

All two of them?
>>
>>84128256
I didn't like it personally, but that's fine if you did. I'm just talking about a commercial standpoint.
If a sequel doesn't make as much as the first one, at least in the Marvel/Disney realm, then it's a failure, even if it made a billion bucks. There's a big difference between critical and commercial success, hence why Adam Sandler keeps cranking out movies and we're on our fifth Bayformers.
Side note, I go to a college with a heavy film program, and it's infuriating how other film students mix up critical and commercial success. Shows a real lack of financial finesse on their parts.

Further update from Hollywood Reporter. Says they were fired for doing more improv on set while Kasdans wanted them to stick to the script.

>it’s become clear that we had different creative visions on this film

This keeps happening.

Pretty sure the problem is the same. They hire directors with some drive to do a spin on it, a shift away from Star Wars formula, studio loves it, the pitch succeeds and then when it's crunch time the Mouse gets cold feet.

The accountants come out with their audience studies and go ACKCHULLY you should include a funny side character and lighten the tone and include more things that were in the other movies..

And so it's mediocre shit again. But mediocre shit makes money reliably, and that's why this franchise exists at this point.

Yes he did, which is why he sold it when he did. He knew Disney was going to kill Star Wars, now the blame is off his shoulders.
>>
>>84128530
Yup, this is exactly how Disney operates. Edgar Wright's Ant-Man film would've been a capeshit masterpiece but the studio drove him away because he dared to have a creative vision. Creativity is frowned upon by Disney and most other Hollywood studios, they want yesmen who will do whatever the execs tell them to do.

I wouldn't have minded Disney acquiring Star Wars if they decided to make something completely new. Rehashing the story of Luke, Leia and Han is so fucking lame and quite frankly ruins the ending of Return of the Jedi. No one needs to see what they've been up to or what their spoiled children are doing. Make a movie set in the Old Republic or something. There's more to Star Wars than one fucking family.

>>
>>84128787
No, I 100% blame this shit on George. He ruined his own franchise, refused to take any criticism and then ensured the total destruction of his franchise just to childishly get back at the people who criticized him. He could've left his franchise to someone he trusted or he could've sold it to a studio that isn't pure evil but instead he decided to give the finger to the same people who made him rich. Fuck him and fuck you apologists.

other anon is correct.

released antman > wright's antman

wright came up with doing a heist movie but then spurged it up with irreverence.

hired gun director worked with adam mckay and fixed it by adding emotional backstory and more action sequences.

going to be in the top 10 highest-grossing list. If it gets more legitimate praise from critics because of rian johnson, more people will go. Also the very title The Last Jedi is fucking huge. The return of Luke Skywalker is huge. I think it will make at least $1.1 Billion, but if everything goes well, it could break $2 Billion and maybe dethrone Titanic???????

Solo, just on principle of the name Han Solo in the title, will break R1's box office, but won't break $1.6 billion.

Also, just saying, the huge success of the new Battlefront games has probably introduced more people to Han Solo.

how can you say it's better than a movie that wasn't filmed and we know very little about what it was originally meant to be? It's not like Wright's script leaked and we can compare the two. All we have is the film that was released and Wright's track record. Wright has yet to show that he's anything but a talented and creative filmmaker. Ant-Man was anything but creative. It was shot in a way that makes Whedon's directing for The Avengers look masterful, the story was like it was written by a computer simulation programmed to write "superhero origin story film #242", and all of the jokes were forgettable quips.

I'll never understand why we're getting a sequel to Ant-Man in between Infinity War and whatever the sequel is instead of something like Nova, where at least it could be connected to IW like Captain Marvel probably will be. But Ant-Man? Fucking hell

None of the Star Wars films will beat Titanic. TFA was quite literally the most hyped film of all time and couldn't do it and there is far less hype for TLJ.
