Was this the greatest Acadamy Award snub of all time for an actors performance? Discuss, rate, share your own etc.

As great as Gladiator and Russell Crow was, the movie simply would not work without joaquin phoenix and his amazing performance. By far the best performance in the entire movie and one of the best played villains of all time

Yet he lost to a literal who in some movie no one remembers

Then only a few years later he loses again in 'Walk the Line' to Druggie Hoffman and his ott gayman impression

Honourable mentions:
Samuel L. Jackson in Pulp Fiction

What other great/iconic performances were unfairly unrewarded by the Acadamy?
>>
>>84105679
Jake in Nightcrawler deserved a nomination
>>
mickey rourke in the wrestler

instead sean penn won for playing a gay
>>
>>84105894
the wrestler was fucken great ,sean penn sucks and I refuse to watch anything he's in.
>>
>>84105679
>Benicio del toro
>a literal who
>>
>>84105852
Agreed
>>84105894
That fucking reminds me of the other performance I was going to bring up

Bill Murray losing Best Actor for Lost in Translation to.......Sean Penn in Mystic River.

You know lads I think we're onto something, Sean Penn stealing oscars from more deserving people like the little bitch he is
>>
>>84105679
Well op,it was a great performance but the ick factor was off the charts. He was so unlikable. I know that shouldn't have anything to do with getting the award but meh.
>>
>>84106022
As much as I love LiT, it wasn't deserving of an Oscar.
Sean Penn definitely deserved it in Mystic River, Milk not so much
>>
>>84106013
I got confused, I was thinking about Samuel L. Jackson losing when I wrote that part

Still, Gladiatorbro got robbed by some cheap oscar bait

Alternatively Joaquin Phoenix in The Master is the best perfomance of this decade and I think he wasn't even nominated. I think Daniel Meme Lewis won with some generic oscarbait
>>
As much as i hate that character, that film, the way it is fucking overrated, and how you are full of Reddit by saying stupid shit like "one of the best played villains of all time", yes, he deserved the Oscar.

Also, ralph fiennes losing somehow to Tommy lee Jones for playing Average Old Sheriff

Maherasha Ali winning last year by playing Average Black criminal With Heart Of Gold

Robert Duvall not winning for Apocalypse Now (or even Godfather, although James Caan also deserved)

Eli wallach not winning for The Good, the Bad and The Ugly

Andy Serkis not winning for Two towers

Mark rylance winning for Bridge of Spies instead of ... literally anyone else
>>
>>84106094
>3 nominations
>0 wins

it's not fair
>>
>>84106064
i just don't get this movie
>>
It only got nods in acting, deserved more imo
>>
I hated how fucking cringy his performance was in that cringy film so much that I never watched any Joaquin Phoenix film ever again

Redpill me on it. He seems like walking cringe Reddit to me

He did get a nomination, Daniel Day-Lewis is god teir in everything even a movie as meh as
Lincoln
>>
>>84106064
Yes and no. The real problem was that while ROTK deserved some oscars it didn't deserve anywhere near the amount it got which were only given to it due to rightfully perceived snubbing in previous years. Basically the judges fucking up two years prior fucked up the ROTK nominations and the great, deserving film that MaC was as well.
>>
>>84106094
This 100%. He was absolutely brilliant in The Master
>>
>>84105679
Meh it was a cartoon villain, overplayed. He made you hate him at least.
>>
>>84106229
>Lincoln
Fuck I couldn't even remember the movie. I've never seen an oscarbait more generic and forgettable
>>
>>84106231
Fellowship deserved the Oscars. More than, what, that Richie Cunningham film?

If it didn't get them it was ok. Two Towers defeats Chicago easily. Could have gotten oscars as a token

Now giving Oscars to Return of the King, the weakest of the trilogy, in a film with Lost in Translation and Mystic River is just non-sense
>>
Is there a bigger meme actor than Daniel Day Lewis? I'm not saying he's a bad actor, he's a brilliant one, but he's so fucking overrated that every time there's any discussion about him it's all just one big circlejerk about how he's the greatest actor to ever live.
>>
>>84106326
The thing is... he really is up there though

He is a meme actor though because his style (method acting) is a meme technique in its self.
>>
>>84106231
It's the weakest film in the trilogy, with the worst acting and special effects. They fucked up with Fellowship but that doesn't mean you give its deserved rewards to an inferior sequel; Two wrongs don't make a right.
>>
>>84106326
The truth is he's been very clever in how he's marketed himself. By deliberately only choosing roles that he likes every couple of years and then completely engrossing himself in them he stacks the deck in his favor as much as possible. Sure he doesn't do as many films as other actors but he makes sure the ones he does do he does incredibly well. By deliberately withholding himself he makes it a huge event every time it's announced he's taken a role.
>>
>>84106483
I know that. Most of the awards that RotK received were cited as awards for the trilogy as a whole and not for the individual film per se.
>>
>>84106326
I saw Lincoln the other day and it was the greatest performance I've ever seen. Stop being such a contrarian cuck. He's allowed to be the best, someone has to be.
>>
>>84106483
The Academy played themselves into a corner with LotR. By snubbing Fellowship and Two Towers so hard they had no choice but give everything to RotK no matter what or lose all credibility. I think they didn't want to give serious oscars to what they considered big, popcorn blockbusters but by the third movie LotR was a cultural event and they had no choice

There will never ever ever ever ever be a greater snub than Al Pacino not winning for Godfather Part 2, this shouldn't even be up for debate

something like that. it was a supposed political thing that upset hollywood.

>Some media outlets reported that Oldman was unhappy with the finished product of The Contender (2000) because DreamWorks had edited the film to reflect pro-Democratic leanings, stirring controversy. The claims were declared sloppy sensationalism by Oldman's manager, Urbanski, who summarized that Oldman was "the least political person he knew", that "neither he nor Oldman had made the statements attributed to them," that they had "produced the film every last cut and frame," and that "DreamWorks did not influence the final cut or have anything to do with it."It has been suggested that Oldman was blacklisted in Hollywood for several years as a result.

Ted Levine from Silence of The Lambs really should have won for best supporting actor. He's literally the only reason to watch the movie these days. Going back and revisiting the film I always tend to feel like Hopkins gives a rather boring and tedious performance. It never really impressed me all that much. Hannibal is just le smart creepy reddit character. Buffalo Bill is the highlight of the film. He's /ourguy/. Sort of reminds me of old /b/.
