Basically Monica's grandmother rented an apartment in the 60's but died in the 80's. Monica took over paying the rent without notifying the landlord at all so they have no idea some new person is scamming their way into a cheap apartment because no lease was renewed and they do not know someone else is living there. For all they know her grandmother was still there in 2004.

That apartment would have been 5-8K a month otherwise even in the 90's. No way a diner chef and a coffee waitress would ever hope to afford it.

Either way a NYC housing company will have anywhere from 5 to 10 buildings and several hundred to thousand tenants renting from them at a time so they cannot possibly keep up with the number of people holding up in their parents or cousin's rent controlled apartment.

I saw one of the newer episodes of the Simpsons, the Boston episode because I had heard Bill Burr was in it, and I noticed that the dialogue is much slower and emptier in these newer episodes for starters, but also the shot of the 'cast' is done in a sitcom-like manner now, especially when they're all walking around in the house. I feel on top of blatant pandering to our hyponchondriacally abused nostalgic generation to feel as if their watching authentic simpsons when those have been long dead, they creators are now subliminally pandering to people that wonder about the inner mechanisms of the Simpsons universe (i.e. things such as the design of the house or the town)

it's absurdly brilliant marketing techniques to create an artificial mythos running like something from the undead

All these shows that have really huge nice apartment across the hall from shitty tiny apartment.

Normally they are separated by floors or are on separate wings of the floor.
