Premiered 25 years ago today. Who would have guessed how quip filled and embarrassing capeshit would become over the next 2.5 decades.

DC is still good you dumbass. marvel is the quipshit studio
>>
>>84091865
They both suck you manchild. BR was the last and only capeshit worth a damn and not just a two hour commercial to sell toys and cheeseburgers.
>>
This movie has a really dumb story and characters but it looks nice. It's like an art piece.
>>
>>84091823
This was the last GREAT capeshit film. A couple of the Spider-Man movies were decent. If we're honest we need about ten years without a super hero movie so we can take a breather
>>
>>84091923
I dunno dude I had many toys and shirts/PJs from this movie.
>>
There's no way in fuck we'd get capekino like this today. No fucking way any of these capeshit studios would allow a renegade director radically warp their properties into an intentionally grotesque and twisted opera, they'd lose too many shekels. It's an honest shame really.

It had merchandising, im not denying that. But the entire point of it existing wasn't to push that merch. That's the difference. Burton used to give a shit and made a visually exciting film. Everything since has just been flicks that exist only to push junk and make Hollywood Jews richer.

I don't know about that. It's pretty dark and fucked up but I loved it as a kid. just because it had the name Batman in it. I do remember being really freaked out by pic related but that's it. Everything else was just a Batman movie, and that was enough for me to watch it over and over again.

Why do you think Burton was kicked off the franchise and Joel Schumacher was brought in to sell toys ?
The movie kicked up a lot of parental outrage. McDonalds pulling advertising, the reviews of it being too dark, the Jewish groups who felt offended by Penguin's characterization, them being unable to sell action figures based on this movie's Penguin, etc.
But kids still liked it because it had Batman and it was weird and funny. The movie was vinticated by history after all the buzz died out.
It wasn't made to be kid-friendly or even that faithful to the source material. This movie is Tim Burton playing with a million dollar budget and franchise with full creative freedom to make up for his frustrations with Batman 89.

it really is amazing how good the aesthetic is,like you can tell the animated series is directly inspired by those films.

Plus unlike how everything has been relatively grounded in superhero films, Batman and Returns takes the opposite direction, it clearly has no time period, things are definitely done not because they make sense but because they visually look good.

plus unlike the other films where Bruce Wayne is some sort of playboy, here they treat Bruce like people treated Michael Jackson in the 2000s, throughout the film everyone talks about how much of a weirdo the guy is.
>>
>>84094258

https://www.counter-currents.com/2012/06/batman-returns-an-anti-semitic-allegory/
>Using “images and cultural stereotypes,” director Tim Burton “depicts the Penguin as one of the oldest cultural clichés: the Jew who is bitter, bent over and out for revenge, the Jew who is unathletic and seemingly unthreatening but who, in fact, wants to murder every firstborn child of the gentile community.”
>The Penguin feigns assimilation into society and gains the citizens’ trust for a time. But eventually even the ignorant masses understand this false prophet for what he is, a primordial beast who seeks retribution, ‘an eye for an eye.'”
The evil, wealthy capitalist who allies himself with the Penguin against the citizens of Gotham is named “Max Shreck” after German actor Max Schreck, who portrayed Nosferatu. Metaphorically, Shreck is a blood-sucking vampire. Shreck “wants only power, but the Jew who has suffered wants to punish others for the crime that was committed against him.”
>“The Penguin’s evil plan is the enactment of a paranoid notion that Jews’ effort to preserve their heritage and culture is a guise for elitist and hostile intentions.”
>“Batman Returns takes place at Christmas time. The Christmas tree, the lights and the mistletoe serve a thematic purpose. They represent the Christian ethic, which will save Gotham City from the false ideology of the Penguin. In the final scene Batman articulates the distinctly Christian moral of this film: ‘Merry Christmas and good will toward men . . . and women.'”

Can we talk about Danny Devito and his sheer dedication to being The Penguin ? Because I think people don't appreciate himenough. Apart from Heath Ledger, I think he's probably the actor who went to the greatest lengths just to make a good performance in a cape film

>“No one would talk to Danny on the set because he scared everybody,” Tim Burton said. “I don’t know if that was his usual way of working, but there was a point where he just clicked into it and was completely this character who was totally antisocial, who had been out of the loop a little too long. Danny was 100 percent into the transformation. With the makeup and all, it was a complete creation.
>Danny DeVito allegedly refused a stand-in for the scene where the Penguin gets pelted with rotten food by an angry mob.
>We made a bodysuit for him that must have weighed a 100 pounds, and it was not out of foam, we were experimenting with silicon. It was such a miserable horrible thing to wear, and we were thinking how were we going to get it on the actor. Well, he loved it. He said "This is so uncomfortable, and this puts me in such a bad mood, that this is perfect for the Penguin".
>“When we were working with Danny on Big Fish [2003],” Shane Mahan said, “he told us that when he’d done the voice-over sessions for Batman Returns, it was much harder for him to find the character without the makeup on. So he actually went to the trouble of having the makeup put on him for the voice-over work, just to help him get into the character. That was a big compliment to us.

It's ironic. Schumacher's last Batman film was way naughtier than Returns, thanks to Uma Thurman and the whole bidding on hot women scene. Yet it still sold the most toys.
Sure Returns had the Penguin biting someone's nose (not off. Just biting) and the whole "just the pussy I've been looking for" scene; But no one explicitly said those movies were for Kids in the first place.

But he wasn't the Penguin. Penguin is a gangster criminal fat cat. He's munipulative, cunning, and power hungry.
He is NOT: a child murderer, a literal penguin, or someone who gets his hands dirty.
He literally had a whole speech in which he called himself an animal while ripping his clothes off. In the comtext of the film... it's silly but it works. But don't think for a second that he was playing the character right.

In yerms of where he falls? He's next to Jared Keto's Joker. Meanwhile Robin Taylor comes closer to Heath's performance with his live action portrayal

This is the first time I heard it so I had to look it up. Apparently some someone with a delicate anus wrote an opinion piece in New York Times, where he claimed that Penguin reminded him of some Nazi caricatures. So fucking stupid. Penguin was just a weird creepy looking fuck - it's not like anti-semitic caricatures have a monopoly on that, and besides, Penguins parents were portrayed as stereotypical rich WASPs.

That guy also claimed that Max Schreck was a Jewish stereotype as well because he used the word "schmo". Also fucking retarded. Gotham was always based on New York and a lot of New York gentiles use Yiddish slang. It doesn't mean shit

Go back to /co/, you sound like a child. DeVito was playing the character right - the character as in the character that was written for the film that he was tasked with playing, not the character as some vague concept informed by decades of different interpretations and creators. Comparing him unfavorably to the guy from Gotham is probably the stupidest thing I've read on /tv/ all month.

>In the comics and Gotham you have one split second of sympathy when someone kaughs at him before he comes out and says "I killed you're child and gave your wife AIDS."

Okay, let me see if I got this right: you read Pain and Prejudice or Joker's Asylum and watched Gotham and that's the understanding you have of Penguin, correct ?
That's why you think him being a freakish and tragic monster is "incorrect" and "Jared Keto" tier and why you dismiss Burton's version as "not muh Penguin", right ? Because you think Penguin has to be one specific way otherwise he's not Penguin, and that specific way is the way you came to like him, correct ?

You are right on one thing: it was a departure from the comics on a lot of things. And that is precisely why it worked so well. It helped to give Penguin the kind of dark characterization that would allow him to leave his campy days behind and enter Batman's new and darker period. The movie, alongside authors like Chuck Dixon and works like Penguin Triumphant, revamped the character successfully.

And my post wasn't even about the character, it was about the actor. And I'll give you this, Robin does a good job.
But do you think putting on a suit and doing a limp and acting is equivalent to, say, spending 3 hours on make-up, putting on a 100 pound silicon suit, and staying on character full time on set just to get the right performance ? And doing such an impeccable job at it that it elevates the character ? don't think it is.
>>
Done? Okay. Bottom to top.
>>84100894
Calling yourself an Apex Predator is one thing. That's the comics. Being raised as some Penguin-like Tarzan is another. In that context (being rejected by humans) I can believe he'd think he was an animal. But again. Thats. The. Movie.

>>84100826
I don't need dozens of examples but if you can find two (that aren't alternate universes) were the Penguin, himself, physically gets up and strangles, stabs, or shoots someone, I'll retract that statement.

>>84100786
I did say that the penguin killed a kid before. But it was never mass infanticide. Again find a comic where he implements a slaughtering of many babies.
>>
>>84100104
>But don't think for a second that he was playing the character right.
yet it was better take on the character that anything in capeshit comics ever
really makes you think...
>>
>>84101141
>it was never mass infanticide
I literally just posted a panel where he states he plans to gass the entire city and affect every woman and children.
That's not really a recurring thing as it was in the movie, yes, but you said "Penguin is NOT a child murderer" and I posted a panel that proves you wrong.

>if you can find two (that aren't alternate universes) were the Penguin, himself, physically gets up and strangles, stabs, or shoots someone
Wanna know how I know you don't actually read comics with the Penguin apart from those two I mentioned ?
Because if you picked any Penguin comic, you would have a chance of finding him engaging in physical confrontation. This was literally one of his major weaknesses.

>Calling yourself an Apex Predator is one thing. That's the comics.
Anon, since apparently you can't read, let me spell it out for you: in that panel he's not calling himself an "apex predator". That's from The Penguin Affair, which predates the movie, and in that panel, he's calling himself a freak and even compares himself to Killer Croc. And since you made such a big deal of how Penguin making a speech about him being an monster is out of character, I thought I'd post one example that proved you wrong.

I'm not even denying that the movie was a departure from the comics. I'm arguing that the things you listed have a precedent in the comics and that this departure was, not only completely necessary, but also a valid way to reinterpret Penguin.
Just because you didn't care about Penguin until Gotham made it cool to like him and Joker's Asylum made him an edgelord doesn't mean you get to decide what makes for a proper Penguin or not, especially when you seem so blindingly ignorant to the character's history.
>>
>>84101083
Okay anon.
I see where I messed up. I'm not going to say that putting on a fat suit and cosmetics is better than physical acting. I'm not going to being up how DeVito looked uncomfortable and barely moved except to walk and swing his arms. I'm not going to say having presence based on legacy of films is easier than method acting. And I'm not going to say simply looking a part doesn't constitute as good performance.
That's all subjective.
I will say that the movie didn't do justice to the Penguin.
>>
>>84094979
Devito did so good that Lego honored him by basing the lego batman movies Penguin on him.

They even made a figure for the lego movie sets based off his portrayal. They also based their two-face off Billy Dee Williams Harvey Dent and even got him for the voice work.
>>

That was a gag referencing The Elephant Man you cinematically illiterate retard.

Reverence to source material has literally no bearing on objective quality. Even if DeVito's Penguin had nothing in common with his comic counterpart (he does, you seem like you don't know much about comics either) it would be IRRELEVANT to his status as the best screen version of the character. Robin Taylor? Give me a fucking break, are you 13?

that_was_the_point.jpg
>I will say that the movie didn't do justice to the Penguin.
And I say that this is just as subjective as your other claims. Hell, even more so. Because your concept of "didn't do justice" aligns with what you think is the "proper way" to adapt a character. Because you think Penguin has to be one way, and if he's done differently, then it's wrong and unfaithful.

The movie did more than do justice to Penguin, it reinvented the character to give him a much needed push.
Most of the things that make Oswald Cobblepot a great villain and character was there in the movie on top of new things. The perpetual divide between who he is and what he wants to be. The class subtext which governs his entire way of thinking. The relationship between his character and Bruce Wayne's. Him being an embodiment of Gotham's identity and his fights with Batman being a battle for such.
It wasn't just Penguin, the fat mobster with a bird gimmick. It combined Penguin with Dr.Caligari, Nosferatu and Richard III to make a much more three-dimensional character. Ironically, despite not being a comics reader, Burton got exactly to the heart of Oswald.

The movie focused on what could make Penguin a good character and a good opponent to Batman, and not just what gimmicks made the fanboys like him (and these gimmicks were there too).

Penguin is a formidable hand-to-hand combatant. If DeVito's Penguin tried to physically fight Batman, it'd look like a Lego figure versus a megablock
>>
>>84101654
And I find Citizen Kane on every single pretentious, "kino" posting movie cringe hipster list in existence. Its an OK movie, but its not the fucking pinnacle of cinema that everyone fucking wanks over. Especially once you find out that the entire movie was Orson literally REEEEEEEIng about Hearst because he made him look like an ass at a dinner party, and that it was written originally by a drunk fucking hack kike who got too old for the socialite drinking parties in hollywood.
>>
>>84101826
It seems like you're more interested in a superficial adaptation of the character than one that actually understands the character to be honest.
>>
>>84092680
Semi related but I thought Halle Barry with long hair and oversized clothes in Catwoman was hotter.
>>
>>84101835
Kane is on everyone's best of list because anyone with any grasp of cinematic grammar understands that Kane was a genuine gamechanger.
>>
>>84101835
And also, to add to that, Orson was too much of a pussy to call out Hearst for the BIG fucking thing he did. He fucking killed a guy, and hollywood and the media that he OWNED covered it up. He killed a guy while trying to kill Charlie FUCKING Chaplin of all people. If Welles REALLY WANTED to stick it to Hearst, why not include that little tidbit?
>>
>>84101875
So were Star Wars and Jaws, but youll see the same "kinologists" bash those movies in the same sentence where they are sucking off Kane. Like I said, its an OK movie, but not the pinnacle. The behind the scenes shit is infinitely more interesting.

I agree, actually. I just talk more about DeVito because Penguin is my favorite Batman villain.
I respect Pfeiffer for playing Catwoman as more than just a sexy seductress. Like Devito, you hear her talk in interviews and she has a pretty solid understanding of what the character is on more than just a base level. In some respects I would almost consider Catwoman to be the true protagonist of the movie, and Batman and Penguin to be opposite ends of a spectrum she dwells on.

And she did put a lot of physical work, too. She had to act with barely being able to hear herself talking and took weeks of whip practicing to get it right. And she actually did manage to hold those birds in her mouth.

Everyone in this movie was just perfectly in synch with their character and it was wonderful.

>>84101826
>Penguin is a formidable hand-to-hand combatant
Man, didn't I just post a panel above where Batman states that Penguin is not a formidable fighter even though he thinks he is ?

To be honest I can understand why you don't like DeVito's Penguin, I'm not saying you have to. I'm just stating why I don't think your criticisms on it are valid and why I think you have a superficial view on the character.
>>
>>84101950
>And she actually did manage to hold those birds in her mouth.

>>
>>84101835
>its not the fucking pinnacle of cinema that everyone fucking wanks over
It isn't.
>it's an OK movie
It's definitely not just "ok", it is a technically, objectively, on most grounds for film criticisms, a great movie.

The only thing I hate about Citizen Kane is when people treat it like it's the absolute pinnacle of Orson's career, when he spent an entire career struggling to make movies and did eventually manage to produce better ones than Kane (like Chimes At Midnight). It's upsetting that snob critics treat Orson as just "the guy who made Citizen Kane" and disregard everything else he did.
>>
>>84102022
SEE, THANK YOU.

Yes, when I say "OK", I actually do mean more than just ok, but at the same time most people forget that he m ade more than just that one thing, and that ONE THING damn near fucking ended him, in more ways than one even, as Hearst could have easily had him killed for it if he had wanted to. In fact, im willing to bet if Hearst hadnt been going through bankruptcy at the time, he very well may have made Orson disappear.

Honestly, real true to facts WR HEARST BIOPIC WHEN? The man was insane.
>>
>>84102129
Yeah, Citizen Kane damn near ruined Welles and he himself thought later that it was too gimmicky (which is really how every director's first film goes). There are so many great things Orson did. He was a great magician. A bold entertainer. Master of theater. The voice of The Shadow. The absolute madman behind the War of the Worlds prank. Produced the swan dong for classic film noir. Revitalized action battles with Chimes At Midnight. Created a new style of documentary with F For Fake. And so on.
And what do snob critics and historians treat him as ? The man who made Citizen Kane. Even if you are not an Orson Welles fan, surely you agree it's disheartening.

And yeah Hearst was fucking insane, I'd like to see a more in-depth biopic of him now that he's dead and presumably he won't try to destroy the filmmaker who does it.

The writer of the movie was Jewish (not sure of Burton) so I doubt he was making an anti Semitic movie but he was clearly influenced by popular depiction of Jews and decided to turn it into a basis of a movie

I wonder if Tim Burton would ever come back and do another batman movie ? His recent movies haven't been great but that's mainly because of the script...his directing is still fine
