Two people who are in love but can't be together.
>>
>>84085736
Anyone else relate to this movie more and more with each passing year? Like the first time I saw it, I didn't get it. But now it just feels like there's so many parallels. Especially the ending.
>>
>>84085959
Guess I will have to watch it again.

The fact that people don't see their relationship in these terms is a little weird

Even PTA talks about them having romantic feelings towards one another that can't be fulfilled
>>
>>84086089
nah, just pure friendship.
when two friends just have a blast to have fun with without having any mutual interests.

Repressed sexual urges.
>>
>>84086127
Really? I never saw their relationship as homoerotic, but again I only watched it twice
>>
>>84086127
romantic feelings =/= sexual attraction/tendencies
>>

It was about characters that meet and their qualities resonate in interesting and peculiar ways. Not even memeing. Freddie is a shell shocked WWII vet who was robbed of his impetus through the war and his drug addiction. Dodd was the leader of a cult, on some level being manipulated by his wife, and running out of ideas. Dodd meets Freddy and realizes he can use the fact that he's devoid of rational thought to run psychological experiments on him, getting to the primal nature of the human mind, he thinks. Eventually, Freddy starts to gain back control of his mind, and leaves Dodd, his master, to become his own master, which is why in the final scene he asks the girl the same questions Dodd had asked him in their first interaction. There's no about, it's just watching the characters develop.

The Master literally says it out loud at the end:

>If you figure a way to live without serving a master, any master, then let the rest of us know, will you? For you'd be the first person in the history of the world.

The master can be a literal master, but in most cases it's a ideology of some kind, some sort of structure, a rule, a set of beliefs that you "subscribe" to. There isn't complete freedom (because it isn't possible and also the idea of freedom has lots of "masters" attached to it as a concept as well). We're all in cults of many kinds.

But that's just my opinion. Also primarily it isn't even about the subject matter, it's about the characters who are polar opposites and can be open and honest with each other but not with anyone else. And they're forced to go on their separate ways (and living inside their own "cults").

In an interview he says that the perfect ending would be for them to start making out or to fuck

why aren't all movies shot on 60mm?
>>
>>84086374

It's not a text interview, it's also really long. Are you a fan of PTA in general? He did a 2 hour podcast with Marc Maron that is probably one of the best podcasts I've ever listened to. Just PTA and Maron shooting the shit about their lives before starting a long discussion about each of PTA's movies, what they're about, how he feels about art and movies and etc etc. Very, very highly recommended if you have an interest in PTA. In that podcast are the comments I'm referring to and I believe he even labels The Master as a "love story." A director doesn't have the final word on their movies though, a point he talks about, so ultimately it is just his interpretation, but I do like thinking about those two characters having deep feelings for one another.
>>
>>84086438
thanks man,
just earlier today I listened to Maron's podcast with Harmony Korine. Also very insightful to listen to.

Will listen to the PTA one, can't wait.

Maron is the one who suggests that ending and PTA laughs and facetiously agrees. Anon, come on.

I can barely sit through a two-hour Korine movie, can't even imagine how tedious trying to make it through a two-hour interview with that talentless hack would be
>>
>>84087123
nah, he actually talks about his influences like cassavetes and herzog. He also talks about making Kids, and his views on cinema. I'm a fan of his, but I think that even for someone who dislikes it, it's very insightful as to why he makes movies the way he does.
>>
>>84085736
Thats sort of my biggest problem with almost every Paul Thomas Anderson movie
They have nice plots, great camerawork and cinematography. He almost always gets top tier performances out of his actors. But in the end they always just seem hollow. Like there is no deeper meaning to his movies, no insightful statements on the world, just a really well told story with not much of a point to it.

I enjoy watching his movies so if someone can argue why im totally wrong about that please do.

Its about how everybody has to submit themselves to some kind of master, be it a person or an ideology or just society, to not be a crazy directionless social outcast caveman. Except the main character -is- a crazy directionless social outcast caveman, drifting through life on impulses without structure.

This seduces the cult leader, who is completely suffocated by his masters. He wants the freedom that he sees in the main character. Meanwhile, the main character sees in the cult leader's life stability, which he covets after a life of purposeless wandering.

They share the moonshine that night and just connect as two animals, without the desire for a master or a desire to escape from masters. They just drop all pretenses and become their true selves for a moment of genuine togetherness they both need.

It's a film about the human need for connection, I guess. Most people get that through society, but these two characters either are mentally unable to follow enough social norms to participate in society, or are so controlled by social masters that it all feels fake to them. They find something real in each other, but they can't keep it. It's kind of a love story, ultimately.

Eq, compression, clipping and limiting

It's very allegorical, but I got it

The Master can also be seen as a study of Freud's psychic (Phoenix-id, Hoffman-ego, Amy-superego). And also as the perfection, if you watch closely, Hoffman's character can never have a perfect theory, that annoys him (since the shouts he make), Freddie is literally the only paradox of his theory, if he can turn Freddie into a normal person, then he can have his theory proven. Freddie doesn't become a normal person, Hoffman's character becomes rich after time but he's still sad, because the theory is a metaphor for our existencialism, and we'll not ever be able to make our life perfect or with a sense, there'll always be a Freddie, who is a thought, a wildly and irrational thought, that just wants to live, and not to think.

Freddie was the id, Dodd the ego, Dodd's wife the superego.

It was a meta middle finger to scientology
