Why do Jap movies look so ugly?
>>
Because Japs are ugly
>>
>>84079042
japanese movies are extremely pretentious, they try to make an "organic scene" but fill a lot of spaces with symbolic objects.
>>
>>84079042

They blur everything.
>>
>>84079371
I mean they way they're shot, it looks like TV, like they're shooting at a higher frame rate.
The two Chinese movies I've seen don't look like that.
Kurosawa's movies don't look like that.
>>
>>84079511
Even Battle Royale doesn't look like that.
Or Kamikaze Girls from what I remember.

It's all the newer Japanese movies.
>>
>>84079375
It must be this and the lighting, look at how bad this looks.
There was also like 8 cuts in a 2 minute scene.
>>
>>84079042
It's because you're watching a no-budget Sion Sono movie.

>>

go back to your star wars
>>
>>84080411
Oh, do most of his movies look like this?
>>
>>84079042
They buried all the cinematographers alive with Kurosawa when he passed.
>>
>>84079716
Looks like a pretty good shot to me. You are posting a low budget art house movie that's 4 hours long (cut down from 6), you really think it that strange that it doesn't look like some crispy clean Nolan film? Not everyone can afford those million dollar cameras or post-production studios.
>>
>>84079042
Watch Zatoichi

Is this movie good? Or is it more anticatholic shit.
>>
>>84081133
It's been a years since I watched it now but yeah it's a pretty wild ride. A lot of Japanese crazy / weirdness in it.
>>
>>84080532
Everything he made before Guilty of Romance looks like shit.
>>
>>84079042
This film begs to differ.
>>
>>84080969
I didn't know it was that low budget. What I really want to know is what specifically about it looks ugly, does the camera affect the look of a movie that much? If you're bad with a low budget camera you should still be bad with a high budget camera. What happens in post?
>>
>>84081232
It's pretty good so far, I was really into this thot ass bitch.
It's not the highest quality but you can find a download link on /r/megalinks.
>>
>>84081260
>Guilty of Romance
Is this any good or does it just look good?
>>
>>84079042
Love Exposure was shot on DV so you can't really compare it to a bigger budgeted film, although a lot of Japanese movies in the 80s and 90s were shot on (or printed for mass distribution on) really cheap film stock.
>>
>>84079042
Sion Sono directed Cold Fish which I would recommend, its visually superior to Love Exposure as well as less drawn out and boring
>>
>>84082647
Damn man

I think its just poor framing and lens choices. Also, pure white walls always look bad and OP background has a lot of negative space.
>>
>>84084575
Is negative space frowned upon?

>>84081384
Once again, I think a poor lens choice. They used a wide angle lens looking down, which gives this almost security camera feel. The room is also very small which enhances the distortion that wide angle lenses produce. Just look at the size of the mans head compared to the rest of his body, wide angle lenses are used to enhance comedy or for scary scenes but not much for what should be a serious scene.

No but it has to be used appropriately and you probably want it to convey something like isolation.

This is my guess that not meny working director in the region don't give a shit about the controlling the color in general. Soo, no matter what you watch things seem in the neutral. But not to mention that some are still good & watchable, though.

Looking at the movies trailer it does seem to have some nice shots but others fall under the same trapping of modern Japanese movies.

Mainly their outdoors scenes, they never have enough depth of field(blurry background) and thus everything looks like it belongs in some tv show or news clip. For this shot they used a long lens, which imo, they should had used a wide lens. Or at the very least change the camera to a lower angle to make the characters more imposing. But I don't know the context of the scene.
>>
>>84085577
>Canon XL-H1
Still way better than the camera I have.
>>
>>84085832
That doesn't make it not shitty
>>
>>84085849
So, what would be a good cheap camera for filmmaking?
>>
>>84085905

Sony FS7

(inb4 someone who doesn't know cameras calls it expensive)

oh and don't bring up blackmagic's meme shit up
>>
>>84085955
Nigga that is expensive what the fuck
Get out of here with that bullshit

>>84085577
Sure enough YT brings up shitty short films with okay looking shots. Its too easy to let them of the hook by blaming the camera.
>>84085905
Depends on your budget and needs. Yeah sure if you work for a production company then something like FS7 should work, but independent films that are shot and bought for distribution at film festivals have been shot on dslr's and of course blackmagic "meme shit"

So then how would you gauge the situation? Just a poor directors doing poor work?
And you're saying you think a cheap DSLR would be fine?

They can't see real good

Get a job

renting one isn't expensive

if you're just practicing moviemaking get a good low light DSLR and lights

Its not really anti-anything, except maybe cults. It has Catholics and even pornographers portrayed in both positive and negative lights. I thought it was pretty good at portraying grey morality.

Give it a watch, its unlike anything you've ever seen. About half the people I show absolutely hate it, and the other half absolutely love it. I'm in the love it camp.

>>84079042
Its an indifilm. The Japs can into good cinematography. Unfortunately, 99% of their live action movies are complete shit these days, which is pretty sad considering how much kino they produced in the black and white days.
>>
>>84081133
It's my favorite movie of all time. I'm warning you though, the last two hours are slow.
>>
>>84093087
>I'm in the love it camp.
why? I feel like I'm missing something, but I haven't finished it yet.
>>
>>84079042
Love Exposure is objectively the best Japanese movie, by the way.
>>
>>84093563
I love this thotty bitch, but the movie isn't that amazing.
>>
It looks like shit because it's shot with a shitty digital camera,

They probably rented tv news or soap opera equipment to make the movie.
>>
>>84079042
what is that type of collar called on the guy?
>>
>posts screen caps from one movie
>why do JAP movies look so ugly?!~?!?!

Fool, but seriously, Japanese films are mostly shit for other reasons.

Actually, Waterboys is the best Japanese movie.

A lot of Jap films look like the camera has been smeared with vaseline which is weird because they make some of the best cameras in the world.

>>
>>84079574
>It's all the newer Japanese movies

somewhere between the late 90's and mid 00's they suddenly all looked like the fucking garbage we have today, and nobody seems to know why the drop off was so severe, the films themselves aren't bad necessarily, but they all just look like too-fake shit
>>
I hate that Every Frame a Painting even dedicates videos to japanese filmmakers because they have no fucking clue what they are doing
>>
because they didn't go to film school. They went to films
