I thought 2014 was passable, but on the whole pretty mediocre.

That being said, I really like the direction they're taking with the sequel. An excellent choice in director, someone who really gets genre movies and hopefully understands the source material far better than Edwards ever did. I'm also totally for them pulling out the stops and bringing in a bunch of Tohos heavy hitters for this. If they want to make a big dumb blockbuster based on Godzilla, they might as well go all in and give us a straight up monster mash movie.

I think it's forgiveable because it had to set up the premise of the universe and that includes a bunch of human characters that no one cares about and their problems. The actual monster scenes were good.

The storyline with the aliens lasts way too long, they should have shortened the film by a half hour by reducing a large chunk of that storyline. Plus, the color filter on all the shots makes the film literally unwatchable, the movie itself is unpleasant to the eye.

A few movies have waited to show Godzilla for a long time but when he shows up you're not usually cockteased the same way 2014 did. For example in VS King Ghidorah he doesn't show up (outside of his dinosaur form) until an hour and two minutes as a quick glimpse and then finally in full a few minutes after. Pretty decent summary. Edwards only knew how to introduce the monster. And until the last five minutes we get a series of introductions. It would have been more tolerable had Godzilla actually been relevant to the narrative (he could be effortlessly removed and very little would change) and the human drama was interesting. Aaron Taylor Johnson, for all intents and purposes, has a one man show after the second act. And he has absolutely no charisma as the protagonist.

I don't know much at all about the history of King Kong or his lore, and I liked both the 2005 King Kong and Skull Island, but I like how Skull Island portrayed Kong more. In King Kong, he's just a gigantic gorilla, but in Skull Island there's more majesty to him. And the fact that the movie emphasizes his intelligence and sense of self more. And so while in both movies, Kong's the last of his species, imo the Kong of Skull Island feels sadder about it than the Kong in PJ's version does, because he's got a greater capacity.

That's why I like the aurora borealis scene so much in Skull Island. It's a quiet moment of Kong gazing up into the sky, probably feeling lonely.

Destroyah would be a good way to wrap up the MonsterVerse or at least conclude the first phase if they choose to do more. Its design is great and is powerful enough that Kong and Godzilla teaming up would be the only way to defeat it. Biollante could also accomplish that but to a lesser degree and its deisgn isn't as menacing or as grand as Destroyah's.

Alternatively they could have 2 monster that are gaining up on Godzilla like the MUTO except he isn't powerful enough to overcome them this time. Then it becomes a tag team match. This doesn't seem like as grand a spectacle though, especially if they don't choose to pursue more movies beyond Kong vs. Godzilla.
