Its going to be worse.

The Captain isn't that asian chick. So we've got two scenarios. The ship gets destroyed, forcing her to transfer to another and being under a new captain. Or, the captain gets killed meaning they bring in the guy. Either way we're going to get her complaining about not advancing. To top it off it will be half black, half vulcan passive aggressive bitching.

That's the sad truth about tv nowadays. As proven by DS9 and TNG, shows need some time to develop into their own.

Modern TV heads have a flag or two to wave and they think that they have some responsibility to the world with their """"power"""" to """"make a difference"""" so it seems highly unlikely that this will have any room in it for good writing or ballsy storytelling.

I will never know for sure because I decided to quit all things nu-trek. After Enterprise, I quit the TV shows. After Into Darkness I quit the movies. Trek is dead to me and I'm certainly not going to pay out of curiosity.

Yes.

Rewrites, delays, the fired the original writer who had passion for the project, they made it an exclusive for their streaming service..

There's no fucking way this will succeed even if it's good. And it's got every indicator of a pile of shit from how the studio is handling it.

We can establish this even before we get to the detailed fuckups.

Its almost as if making it into a soap opera with no qualities of Trek intrinsically preserved was a bad idea and people cashed out on Trek as a whole.

Kinda like whats happening with Discovery, people are just saying fuck it to the idea. They've checked out, just from a different paradigm. Instead of not wanting soap opera in their trek, they don't want the obvious 1:1 parallel to modern tumultuous earth. OG trek at least made it allegorical, this is just blatant.

Here's an interesting thing:
http://trekmovie.com/2017/06/19/star-trek-discovery-to-premiere-on-september-24-split-first-season/
>In Canada Star Trek: Discovery will premiere simultaneously on CTV and the Space Channel on the same night at the same time as CBS in the U.S. (Sunday, September 24 at 8:30 p.m. ET / 7:30 p.m. CT). The second episode follows immediately the same evening only on Space.

If the rest of the show is aired on Space, maybe we can see it without having to invest in CBS All Access bullshit.

I've heard a fantastic idea once. Remake Star Trek TOS with the sex and violence of game Game of Thrones. Pretty good idea. Unfortunately, scifi just doesn't have as big an audience as singing and dancing. With or without the sex and violence, it shouldn't be on network, but on cable or Netflix.

Keep it nerdy, faggot.

Give us our tachyon emitters and quantum electrodynamics. Give us our antimatter fueled nacelles and a culture defined around how smart, benevolent and achieved they are. Give us people who truly believe that achievement is its own reward. Give us 3D chess. Give us a captain like picard who is a real father figure, filling the void of the fatherless children of the scowling wretches of single mothers. Give us true meritocracy. Give us hope of a better future in the uncertainty of cold space.

Give us what we actually fucking want.

Star Trek is best when you have stand-alone stories that last 1 episode or at most 2 episodes, and the status quo is returned on the next episode.

Problem is they look at the success of the recent breed of shows like that, the ones that try to be like a movie but split up into a dozen episodes, and they just want a slice of that success.
Long form continuity like what DS9 had is not good Star Trek, but then again they are not building this show for Star Trek fans, take the reboot films for example.

The biggest thing that pisses me off about Discovery, is that I have been watching the series for like 35 years now, and feel obligated to keep up with new trivia, which will feel like painful homework in the face of a bad bad series installment. It didn't bother me that Enterprise was a prequel, because it was clear they tried to be faithful to the franchise as a whole. Discovery on the other hand, is a clear cash grab from people that just never gave a damn.

The press announcement or whatever CBS had where they gave their reason for the delay pretty much confirmed that they have no idea what they are doing

It was all about time to build sets and travel to locations and other "production value" reasons. They dont get that no one is concerned about that. We watched all these shows with comparably much lower production values. Everyone is worried about the writing.

They're focusing on the look of it to be shiny and sci-fi but not the writing or plot.

>If you're opposed to the politics why are you consuming it at all?

I'm a trek fan. And by that I mean I'm a TOS, TNG, DS9 fan. Voy and Ent were garbage. On the off chance by some incredible miracle they did make something good I would be happy as hell.

>Also, which political philosophy do you adhere to which says that stealing the hard work of others is ever justifiable?
>hard work

Ohh haha. Wew. Okay. I torrent nearly everything. Probably half the stuff I torrent is so bad, I don't even finish watching it. For free. If I had gone to the theater I would probably not have walked out, but I would have definitely felt ripped off, cheated and disgusted. Another third I finish watching but usually put it between terrible and bad. Maybe 20% of the stuff I watch I could honestly say is good. And that's being very generous. I honestly don't know how a normie like you fucking takes it. I mean paying for the shit they shovel at you year after year. Goddamn. Even for free I'm disgusted by the quality of the product. It's sickening. I'll never pay for media again. If I think a show or movie was excellent I want to support it I will buy the dvds/box sets etc usually as gifts for other people.

>Just don't watch it if you feel so strongly about it. Otherwise it just seems like a mealymouthed excuse

If I don't at least watch enough of it to see how fucking awful it is I won't be able to make fun of how bad it is properly, which will almost certainly be more fun that watching the actual show will be. Because the fact is every single sign points to it being spectacularly bad. I would be as happy as hell to be proven wrong. But don't bet on it.
>>
>>84098818

There was an star trek acadamy series idea being kicked around for a while that took place after Voyager, but that got dropped for the safe prequel route.
>>

>I torrent nearly everything
So your opinion literally doesn't matter. No content creator will ever cater to you. There's no reason to. By your own admission, you steal everything. You even steal things you hate.

Who gives a shit what you think, gutter-dweller?
>>

The fact that you think they will ever cater to YOU is the funniest thing of all.

I pay to crowdfund shit I love all the time. It's actually really fun and empowering. I'll pay to see Discovery for as long as I like it. I at least have skin in the game. You have nothing but entitlement and whining.

Oh, so you're the /co/cksucking tumblrite we have to thank for ruining our franchise

if cbs just dropped the lie that this was in-canon prequel to TOS I'd give it an honest chance.

but they made their choice.

I don't visit /co/, read comic books, or use tumblr. You're really awful to interact with. Have you ever considered that your problems with Star Trek might be your own problems and not Star Trek Discovery's?
>>

Being a patron of art you wish to commission using your own funds is indeed empowering as well as fun.

Feel free to continue stealing everything and complaining about it though, I'm sure that gives you some kind of satisfaction too.

Niggers and ham-fisted multiculturalism are society's problem, how very short sighted of you to pin it on one person

Why do the uniforms look like that? Captain Pike's crew's uniforms were even simpler than Kirk's. People pretty much just wore sweaters.

I'm not complaining about it. I'm not whining about it. I'm not entitled.

I'm telling you you are stupid for paying into a system that metaphorically shits in your mouth every year, ran by people who variously run the gamut from not knowing or caring you exist to holding you in utter contempt and despising you.
>>
Star Trek has always been more bad than good. Im a huge fan, but there are SO many terrible episodes, entire seasons that have been garbage.

I'm just stoked on having some Trek back on TV. But then again, i'm not some self entitled child that believe everything should be made for me.

I'll watch it.

Why is Hollywood so unattached from consumers? Nobody wants this, this is not a series any of us asked for and it completely lacks creativity.

Please do not expect any ties into canonized series, races, or anything else Star Trek. Just look at the fucking KANGONZ, these people have never watched an episode of Star Trek.

They're going with what feels safe and by doing that they're completely throwing fan service out the window. I would be fine with this shipwreck of a show if it were somehow only in the JJ Universe, but it's not.

I have seen a dozen alternates to this show posted on here that are so much better than what we have coming. Fuck CBS.
>>
>>84088618

BSG too high. VOY too high. Expanse too high.
>>
>>84100745

It's not that they are only unattached at this point, they hold the consumers in complete contempt.
>>
>>84100469
They should have just copied the JJ Trek uniforms.

>>84100565
It won't be on "tv", goy.
>>
>>84100805
That would make even less sense - those designs are from an entirely different timeline.
>>
>>84086660
There are a lot of Star Wars games for that console generation that were good but completely forgettable.
>>
>>84100844
Isn't this show just a few years before TOS? Assuming that different timeline didn't lead to,the creation of different uniforms, we can believe that the Jar Jar Abrams costumes are a modern interpretation of what we saw in TOS.

I just don't understand what they're wearing in STD. Makes no sense any way I look at it.

Think of it less as a prequel to TOS and more as a sequel to ENT.

Regardless, where are the colors? Command, science, engineering? I can't tell who is who with these uniforms, they're going for that ugly dark muted color aesthetic that is plaguing modern television.

I also think STD is closer in age to TOS than ENT.
>>
>>84101104
Believe it or not, real life military engineers aren't distinguished by mustard yellow uniforms.

This looks like the kind of show that could be shit for the first season or two but maybe become good once it finds its way.

The jokes look like the worst part of it, if they can get that under control and adapt more of a star gate/firefly type feel I could see it ending up being okay.
>>
>>84101143
Believe it or not, Star Trek isn't real life and the producers have thrown any idea of continuity out the window. Stop defending this shitty show for some reason. Are you a literal shill?

Also, engineering would be red. You MUST be a shill.
>>
After this fails they will blame the audience for not being progressive enough, which is laughable since the star trek audience is literally the most progressive, open-minded, kind fan-base in existence. Still the final verdict after it's failure will be "Maybe fans were not ready for a WoC in a central role in star trek" "Maybe some fans were threatened by women in leadership roles". Not "It was fucking awful with terrible writing, ideas fans didn't like or ask for and things that didn't make sense".

Just like after Ghostbusters failed. Why did it fail? "An alt-right smear campaign and virulent sexism" Not "It was fucking awful". After The Dark Tower movie bombs it will be "Fans perhaps were not comfortable with a black Roland" not "It was in development for a decade with a dozen different scripts and half a dozen different producers". Why are Marvel comics not selling it's "What we heard was that people didn't want any more diversity. They didn't want female characters out there." (actual quote) not "We tried to use diversity as a sales gimmick, changed characters in ways our fanbase didn't like, and most of our writers are terrible".

If the rumors about the Muslim crew member are true they will blame Discovery's failure on "Islamophobia and alt-right racism" as well.

Consumers for being idiots.*

*usually partially justified. WW was the best thing the DCU has done so far, but it was not really very good.
>>
>>84101239
I haven't seen WW and I don't intend to see it, but the fact that /tv/ was so very wrong about that gives me hope that /tv/ will be wrong about this too.
>>
>>84087238
This is the world that the SJWs created. Literally nobody had a problem with Janeway or Sisko back in the day (beyond Voyager being shit), yet today a female or black Star Trek character is just another battleground in the identity politics war. We were making steady progress towards a more tolerant society, but then the crazies decided that they wanted it NOW SHITLORD and got people's backs up.
>>
>>84101285

It was okay. It was not completely terrible. Gadot is an awful actress and woefully miscast, but this shit ain't Shakespeare and most people have not read the comics and don't know or care what WW is supposed to look like. At a minimum it was loads better than BvS or MoS.

Does it deserve 92% on RT, almost universal acclaim, and whats looking like what will be a billion dollar take? Christ no.
>>
>>84101396
There's also the fact that /tv/ was obsessed with its politics, fearing that it would advocate for white genocide and forced castration of all males. Since /tv/ was wrong about that, I can hope that /tv/ is overreacting about STD's politics too.

Of course it will suck... but at the same time it will likely become extremely popular among the trektards, who are a bunch of queers anyway.
>>
>>84101340

Yeah that's the thing. Everyone loved Sisko. VOY was terrible because of the writing staff, not because of Janeway. But any criticism of this new series will be sexism, racism, hate speech, etc.

Just like how everyone loved Lando but saying you don't like Boyega means you are in the KKK. Everyone loved Ripley and Sarah Connor but saying you don't like Ray means you are a redpill date-raping mansplaining /pol/ack. Oh you didn't like the new Ghostbusters? Are you also a member of the Nazi party then?

It's never the fault of the creators making garbage now, it's the fault of the fans for not accepting it without complaint and just swilling it down obediently.

You know, but my question is, is it aactually going to fail?

I have been to a lot of science fiction conventions in my time (I'm an author), but recently there has been a change in who is considered a nerd. Nerd culture has become a dynamic where you're supposed to just swallow what they give you and justify it later.

Sure, the Trekkies and real hardcore science fiction fans won't be happy with it, but the type of person who likes Star Trek, buys Funko Pop, and puts Starlord stickers on the back of their car is going to eat this shit up. I can see this being accepted with open arms by "nerds" who will then call themselves real Star Trek fans for sticking through it.

My only hope is that it fails because of CBS' bizarre choice to stream it on their garbage app,
