People experience drugs fairly subjectively and it can even go so far as to have the complete opposite effect in some people, known as a paradoxical reaction.
Most opioids / opiates feel similar at a high enough dose. Heroin is mainly taken by IV for it's "rush" a short-duration extremely potent part of the high that lasts a minute or so after injection and the rush is the main reason people IV (besides also not having to wait for the drug to kick in). Another opioid that is often compared to heroin in terms of it's euphoric rush is oxymorphone or hydromorphone.
In fact, recently there's been some talk of removing oxymorphone from the list of legally prescribed opioids due to it's extremely euphoric rush and the abuse that follows.

Methadone is a useful tool to treat opioid addiction. It only works if the person truly wants to quit, though.
The problem with methadone maintenance therapy is that methadone, unlike buprenorphine you can continue to abuse other painkillers while on methadone. Buprenorphine can actually prevent other painkillers from having any effect while you're taking it due to it's strength at binding to the opiate receptors in your brain. Bupe is also unique in that if you attempt to take it too soon after using other opioids (painkillers) or you try to use a normal painkiller while the bupe is still in your system it won't have any high at all and will actually throw the person into severe withdrawals (known as precipitated withdrawals), so it's far more effective at preventing people from relapsing.

Methadone is great for some people. Methadone is also a mild NMDA antagonist so it will help treat depression and deal with pain better than buprenorphine (methadone is a stronger mu-opioid receptor agonist, which makes it good for treating pain, but also means it can cause euphoria and be abused).

It all depends on the person and in Carrie's case she should have been on buprenorphine since she obviously couldn't be trusted not to abuse her drugs.

Most people who are using opioid substitutes are using them long-term. As in they slowly titrate the dose down over years or in some cases stay on them the rest of their lives.
Methadone maintenance can easily be done in a way that drops the dose down slowly over long-periods of time so that the person never experiences acute withdrawals and that's how methadone maintenance is supposed to be done. It's a months to years long commitment at best.

Here's some proof to back up that I do have experience with it.

I'm really surprised that Fisher was apparently on those drugs. Prescription drugs like Xanax or Oxycontin wouldn't surprise me, especially since she's old and it would have been a long flight. But why would she take ecstasy, heroin, AND cocaine for a fucking flight? and how the fuck did she fall asleep while on ecstasy and coke? Because if she took enough heroin to balance those out, she'd have died from an overdose, not fucking sleep apnea.

It's actually very beneficial for chronic pain, though. I've been on methadone for 12 years like I've said, but I'm still on a low dose of 20mg per day. After years of experimentation I found that a low dose that takes the edge off of the pain can be managed without needing to constantly up the dosage.
It's allowed me to get into an area where I'm able to function and become a member of society, before that I was useless.

The problem with opioids is their addiction potential, though. Nobody is immune to that. It took me many years to realize that I need to be responsible and manage my medication and not abuse them. Now that I'm able to do that I've found that they've been a great benefit to my life.

I went down that road a bit myself. I never did heroin, because I live in an area with nasty tar heroin (it's almost guaranteed to give you an abscess if you miss the vein and causes all sorts of terrible diseases. MRSA, heat valve infections, etc. All because tar heroin is poorly made and filled with bacteria) despite the fact that tar heroin has a better high than powder heroin. (Tar contains a lot of 6-mam, a potent metabolite of heroin that crosses the blood-brain-barrier very fast, causing a strong rush).

I experimented with many pharmaceutical opioids and briefly with some Research Chemical opioids before they became the huge issue they are now (mainly acetylfentanyl and butyrfentanyl when they were unscheduled).

It fucked my life up badly, like most addicts, but I managed to get it completely under control in the last ~5 years. Now I never get high and have learned to manage my dosage and just have it be a normal part of my life.

Personally I think a person should be educated on substances and then that person should have the right to choose any chemical they put into their body, whether it's benign to the body or can cause major damage to the organs. A person should have the right to determine what goes inside their own body to affect it and the war on drugs has been a terrible failure. It's only empowered criminals by giving them an easy way to raise money and influence and helps spread disease through poor sanitation habits and poor quality drugs.
