Well she was doing to the cat what everyone was doing to her, she was ignored and possibly abused. So she was abusing something smaller than her, something she had power over. I can't quite remember but she kills herself after her friend or brother has tricked her and stole her money, right? That was just the final straw.

And then when she dies everyone pretends that it's a big deal but no one cared before. She symbolizes all the good that gets corrupted and destroyed. So that's how irimias can rouse everyone with his speech at her funeral.
