I honestly don't see a reason why anyone would watch the show after reading the book. Mystery is what made the plot interesting, the fact that the reader is only ever aware of as much as the protagonist is and that made you want to keep going.
Without the mystery the story just feels dull, especially if it's in a tv show format and you have to waste time with filler episodes.

See the intro to the last episode. You have that focus on objects in the workshop. But it's not really here to tell you anything about Anansi. It's uninterested in the process it's presenting - the making of the costume.

Earlier in the show, you can see Odin playing with a dandelion, the grains going to the sky and turning in thunder.

Then he mentions Ostaria used to receive dandelions in sacrifice.

good post but ruined by the reddit spacing anyway lad,you will learn to adapt soon enough.

The first couple of episodes were fairly good but I've just started to dislike it more and more with each episode.
The dialogue seems fine to me for the most part. The story seems to be meandering quite a bit with no real direction in the later episodes, most of the shit with the deadwife seems like it should've been cut.
And the cinematography varies from being acceptable to fucking awful, like when Wednesday revealed himself as Odin to Shadow and started the war with the new gods the spinning camera (It reminded me of Berserk 2016) with McShane's weak "I am Odin!" and the goofy CGI face in the clouds just seemed like it wasn't thought out very well, or it seemed better to Fuller in his head and he was too lazy to make sure it was executed well.

The haram muslim guy and other sex scenes seem too indulgent as well.

Gaiman isn't really a great author to begin with in my opinion though so I am glad I didn't have huge expectations going in, the show is still pretty watchable.

That's one of the issues I take with the interpretation of the show so far. The book was layered. It was everyone with and against everyone else. The show feels all too often a lot less nuanced in its presentation - I think it tries, but it doesn't hit the right notes often enough. It ends up more marginal minorities vs central powers, so to speak.

And that's the thing with the Great Battle not happening. It *is* the significant event. Everyone getting on the swindle, but also acknowledging, reminded of the need to live together.
But the whole value proposition of this changes if you frame it into an imperialistic set up.

Something the show has kind of already given up is that new gods formed for basically everything modern. There is a mention of "The Iron Gods" in the book who manifested out of peoples' love of the railroad but they faded out pretty quickly. Wednesday mentions in one chapter he doesn't know whose side the highways are on which could have been a cool scene where gods for the road are introduced and they turn out to be some of the oldest gods. Then the car gods holy shit I hope they're in the show. They were in only one scene but were described as wearing leather gloves and having chrome teeth.

I think to answer people's questions as to why certain gods aren't stronger due to more believers, I think the nature of belief plays a major role in the power of the god. Like nobody who uses the internet believes the internet has any direct power. It's a powerful communication and archival tool but it doesn't have any brawn, no one believes for a second the internet can directly kill someone. The power of the internet begins and ends at an ISP. The worst thing the internet can be used for is subterfuge, espionage, blackmail, the spreading of viruses and the like but that's pretty much the extent of its power. Most governments don't keep sensitive things on a public network or opt for obsolete technologies to keep private things private. That's probably why Media is so much more powerful, most of the things we use technology for nowadays are for some form of media, and we rarely use technology for any other reason. And media's ability to spread information encompasses all of that of technology's, except it's more powerful because it thrives on spreading misinformation as much as factual information.

Compare this to a god like Odin whose most basic tenets grants him all sorts of supernatural abilities and powers and it's no wonder why he'd be so much more physically powerful.

Honestly, this was more Hannibal S3 than S1/2. Which is not a good thing.

I hoped that Fuller would pull back on his "style is everything" crap, but I guess he didn't understand the reason Hannibal got cancelled: it wasn't just ratings, it was because the execs stopped liking it.

Fuller, of course, has a great mind for merging style and content, but he so often forgets that style should enhance content, not supplant it. When there's too little content and too much style, it just gets annoying as shit. It's sad (Sad!) that the best episode of the season was the Laura-centric flashback one, simply due to it not being so Fuller-ized.

That said, most of the sex scenes were overdone, and I wouldn't be surprised if it was due to the same "must have fairly explicit sex scenes" mandate that other premium cable channels have. It's silly, especially on a show that has higher aims than basic relationshit/sex-is-politics plotlines.

This entire season was garbage. We spent more time with Laura than we did with the main characters. And let's be honest, that's because they need the filler. The central plot doesn't have much substance. Once these false gods have their little battle the whole thing is over.
