In the story the reason he's in the taxi is to look for his ex-wife. And then once he finds her she tells him that they had a kid she gave up for adoption. Then he and his ex-wife technically "kidnap" their daughter from the adoptive couple and at some point his ex can't stand it and went to the cops, and he gets imprisoned for a few years.
