You're right. After his heart attack, Letterman just sat at his desk, obviously not wanting to do any remote segments. Eventually, they stopped going outside the main studio entirely and the show started to get pretty bad. He left at just the right time.

David Letterman was funny when his show was Late Night, everything was a gag. When he went prime time he had to cut out all the funny gags and so his show was half serious, half off-the-wall. Unfortunately Jay Leno copied Lettermans interview style so now we are plagued by talk shows where the host constantly blurts out stupid comments. Letterman should never have been allowed to go primetime, he was good at inane shit, but when he tries to act serious it all falls apart.

Letterman was good at being funny within wholesome boundaries which requires more skill than you'd think. I always enjoyed his show in the 90s.

Granted, I did not watch him the last 15 years of his career, but I have pretty fond memories of him from the 90s.

He could be pretty funny at times. Like when richard simmons came on and he hosed him down with a fire extinguisher (implying he was flaming). It was done without prior arrangement too because simmons was really butthurt about it. The whole interview was comedy gold. That or the one when Madonna gets openly hostile with him....

I really liked him.... though I'm sure his passion waned with age as it does with everyone and his last years weren't as good.

He really hit many crazy fortunate events that made him big. He was just a weatherman in small town Indiana that made jokes. The people liked him and Johnny Carson had him on. Johnny Carson liked him so much that he would have Letterman fill in if he had to take a sick day or go on leave. Then out of all the potential Carson replacements he managed to get the Late Night gig. That's the gist of it, I may not have those facts 100% right, but that's basically what happened.

Youre not old enough to remember when Letterman first had a daytime show that bombed...obviously, that his kind of humor doesnt connect with a daytime audience. When he got late night (which started at 1:30 in the morning, he had more freedom to do what he wanted, and he was very funny at that time. I would love to watch those old episodes, there was a lot of clever skits. But as I said, all his funny inane shit got cut out when he went primetime, he was never meant to be a replacement for Johnny Carson, his brand of humor still has ill effects on all the current talk show hosts who copy him, Conan being the most blatant rip off of Letterman

Well, the daytime talk show demographic is way different than the late night demographic. Daytime talk shows are watched primarily by old retired people and house wives, but mostly the very old. Late night talk shows typically are watched by teenagers through middle aged people.
