Why the fuck would a 60+ year old woman reference an obscure indie film in conversation with her family? So much of the dialogue felt like it was trying to be clever without being natural.

It's a cautionary tale about the evils of feminism. Rory ends up being a post wall woman who is all alone. Added to being alone, she doesn't even have a career to fall back on. She wasted hey prime years and an Ivy league education.
