Also it hasn't been bad at all this season. Compare it to Lizbian from Series 7/8. Things have either been done more comically or even ironically with Bill shown as less progressive than her character implies:

Even with Thin Ice, it was only funny because he was blatantly an asshole, not just a racist, to the point that the Doctor immediately punched him.

I promise I'm not one of the insufferable RTD baiters in this thread but I personally think Moffat's writing is more enjoyable when it comes in the form of an episode or two every series, and doesn't really carry a whole show very well on its own.

RTD wrote the series as a comparatively grounded and "normal" scifi soap opera, which made Moffat-penned episodes like "Blink" and "The Girl in the Fireplace" stand out for being so weird and out-there by comparison. Moffat's strength after all has always been deconstructing Doctor Who rather than playing it straight, by exploring things like the ramifications of time travel, nonlinear storytelling, etc.

But while this style of writing worked great as an occasional jaunt from less-deconstructive storytelling, it became less effective when it turned into the new normal. When "Blink"-style fuckery is spread out over the course of an entire series or even multiple series (cracks in time, The Silence, "doctor who?", the mystery of River Song etc.) instead of introduced and resolved in the same episode, it starts to become less clever and more plodding and nonsensical. The ongoing storylines got a little too ambitious for their own sake and the series started collapsing in on itself.

Just my opinion, feel free to tell me I'm a pleb for thinking this way.

Tennant was an entertaining Doctor but he Doesn't have the depth or presence Capaldi has. Not to say that he didn't have some damn fine episodes but Capaldi takes to the role far more naturally and does an extremely good job at dealing with whatever lines he's given. I've said it before but it speaks volumes of Capaldi's ability when he's given such a shit series as the current one but still manages to shine above the bullshit, something Tennant just wouldn't be able to do in the same capacity.

I think a new showrunner make a big difference. But since they lost a lot of viewers they probably need more than that. I think they should make a clear break with Moffats Who. Go the opposite direction in every aspect that Moffat failed. Make characters feel real. Show them don't tell them. And so on. But also break from areas that are not bad, but still very Moffatish. This would most likely mean a change in style, less fantasy and more sci fi maybe?

I Actually like the direction the show has taken in one regard. The shorter story arcs instead of a whole season being one plot line makes the episodes less over the top. The seasons with Matt, Amy and Rory and Clara was a real mess of over the top "the most important thingy in the world of all time".

Because she was a well-written and well-acted character, in the sense that she was actually believable as a human being who might exist.

Note that I'm not judging her quality as a companion. If you don't like Rose, then fair enough. There are good reasons for not liking her as a person.

But from a writing perspective, she was convincing as a character. I think she's the most convincing out of all the NuWho companions, followed by Donna and Martha in no particular order.

Moffat can't write characters for shit, although I'd say that he's better at actual stories than RTD was on balance.

Finally got around to yesterdays ep... not as bad as I was expecting, not great either. The monster was really a non problem and it was solved too easily for me. The last 5 mins made up for it though I love the Capaldi + Gomez chemistry. Why can't moffchads and rtdchads just get along? It's bananas and apples. Both can be quite tasty and together make a lovely fruit salad. The doctor dances and blink are pretty well regarded as nuWho's best stories and RTD said he never touched a moffat script, but how involved in it's execution was he? What conversations did he have with the director and other production. For most RTD and Moffat's collaborations were the best of nuWho.
