Context for what? The characters don't behave differently after that point, and the french have basically no impact on the plot, be it before or after their inclusion.

You could remove that sequence in it's entirety and the movie would play out the same.

The only extra scene really worth it on the redux version is Kilgore's obsession with surfing and demanding one of the team to go surf, only to have them steal one of the surf boards when their boat arrives.

The dvd I have has both versions but I almost always watch Redux.
