These are the versions out there.

149-minute (2 hours, 29 minutes) theatrical cut
300-minute (5 hour) miniseries
208 minutes(3 hour, 28 minute) "Director's Cut"

There is also a 290ish minute version which is the miniseries without the "Last time on Das boot" type opening for each episode.

I recommend both the 208 minute and the 300 minute version. the 208 minute version is most likely the best one to watch first, it is the most accessible one.

The miniseries is amazing, but it delves more into the idea that "U boat patrols ranged from moments of terror to huge amount of boring patrol time." and not everyone likes that.

I love the film.

OP, any difference between the blu-ray and dvd of Das boot?

I know some films, for example Predator 87' looks like shit on blue ray. I'm so glad I bought the special dvd edition way back when.

The Blu-ray is very well done.

Compared to the DVD, there is a shift to more of a blue color, but that is much more accurate to what the film was.

Hey thing is to watch it with German language and english subtitles.

The English language track misses a few of the jokes.

I always prefer subtitles if I'm watching a foreign film. I watched The longest Day on the 6th for the first time in dubbed english and it just didn't feel right.
