No one watches NuWho anymore not because of the writing, but because of Capaldi. Casuals couldn't get into an older Doctor they also perceived as "mean".

I remember loving Doctor Who when it was about pacifism and loving every piece of life in the universe
You know, among most hardocre fans this subplot is nothing, it's mostly post time war ecclestone and tennant, but for me as a kid that meant alot
There are a lot of lines about hating guns, hating wars, fixing stuff with your diplomacy and mind, exploring universe, seeing new lives, new civilisation, new magnificent people

I remember being so proud of Ninth when he decided to be a coward in parting of the ways
Or that part in doctor dances when he said that he destroyed guns manufactory and now there's a banana grove
or all that times when they said to normal ordinary people that they are in fact special and deserve to live and to see universe
I miss all that stuff

now Doctor Who is dark
doctor kills people or just doesnt care or just acts like a mean grandpa
side characters are just random one-liners or plot devices now
and none of this makes emotional impact because everybody lives anyway

How does he go forward? Tennant and Smith set the bar as upbeat charismatic doctors go, any further and he might as well be camp.

The last day was literally one day of hundreds of years of dark shit. In the audios he straight up commits genocide, murder, and even kills other Time Lords.

Even if that's not canon, he renounced the name before he regenerated into War, changing the last day has nothing to do with changing who he was and what he had done in the hundreds of years prior.
