L.A. confidential is one of my faves. I guess broken city and dead man down would qualify for more recent films.

great choices anons
some of my favourites:
Night Moves
Body Heat (it's not exactly about a private detective but it's still very noir-ish and a great watch)
The Long Goodbye
Klute
Hardcore
Kiss Kiss Bang Bang
The Conversation (main guy is a surveillance expert, so basically like a PI)
Cutter's Way
>>83951116
Klute is great, but Fonda outshines Sutherland by miles.
>>83950727
The Robert Altman "The Long Goodbye" from 1973 is fantastic.
>>83950990
Not OP, but wrong Night Moves you fucking imbecile
>>83951116
>Klute
>Hardcore
>Cutter's Way
I haven't seen any of these. Good recs.

8MM, the snuff-movie-thriller with nicholas cage, was basically a remake of "Hardcore".
Zodiac
LA Confidential
Prisoners
Gone Girl
The Girl with the dragon tattoo (sort of pseudo-detective work anyway)
Se7en
Mystic River
Fargo
The Usual suspects
The Departed
Primal Fear (more on the legal side but still)
Silence of the Lambs
Training Day

Basic bitch.

I just watched that a few weeks ago.It was a little more "popcorny" than I expected but I still really liked it.

>Mystic River
Oooh this is on HBO right now. Might watch it tonight.
>>83951490
Fuck. Okay, what's the one they make everyone watch in film 101- it's like babby's first noir- where the first 2/3's are done entirely in flashback? Like the protag is some detective or something and falls in love with the girl he's investigating and then goes into hiding and opens up a gas station in a small town?
I'm really blanking here.

Answered my own stupid question with just a little googling- Out of the Past.

Glad you sound interested, but as a precaution I wouldn't go around bragging about it if you have strong opinions one way or the other because it's really some entry level shit.
And hey! Just for being a sport, here's the iconic opening shot to Touch of Evil by Orsen Welles in case you haven't seen that one either.

The Maltese Falcon if you want a noir detective film. Most of Hitchcock's great films aren't necessarily focused on detectives, but do focus on uncovering mysteries if that's what you're looking for.
how has no one mentioned this yet?

There was a private detective?
