Ozu used those two actors so much I can't figure out what movie it is just from the screenshot. Since you're obviously a huge pleb and haven't watched 20 Ozu movies like I have, that has to be either Tokyo Story or Late Spring.

>>

>>
>>83946700
It had been years since the last Mad Max movie had been released so fans were excited to see the crazed australian cop return to the big screen. Helps that it was action kino and had no cgi, only practical effects
>>
>>83947662
Lol. It's Late Spring.
>Japanese family dynamics
>What is marriage, if you really think about it?
>>
>>83947793
so that makes it a masterpiece?
>>
>>83947793
it had a bunch of cgi, it was just fairly subtle
>>
>>83947844
Who says its a masterpiece? I recently rewatched it and noticed it has some glaring flaws. The flashbacks Max has are out of place and go nowhere. They never explained who or what the swamp people were. The satellite implied civilization was still going on somewhere else and max becomes a secondary character in his own movie.
>>
>>83946732
100%

It's good and impressive that it doesn't feel painful to watch for how long it is but the payoff is awful and feels like it's making fun of you for investing all your time into it.

Most people like it because it was a straightforward action flick. It had little plot to get in the way and the action scenes looked great. For a summer blockbuster it's pretty good

I like Lynch but hate that Blue Velvet gets all of the love. Thanks for being kind though friend

>>83949284
I would love to know why anyone loved it. I read a buttload of reviews and everyone praised it for purely esoteric reasons. I just didn't think the slow build up and (in my opinion) random shots added up to anything of genuine substance
>>
>>83949286
I feel you man, I think it's just because of how accessible it is compared to the rest of his work. That and Dennis Hopper is just so good in it, I preferred Mulholland Drive desu. And no problem, why argue when we can discuss kino?
>>
>>83949379
To be fair, I also went in to Twin Peaks expecting to love it, but thought it was overdone and schmaltzy. Hopper's dialogue is so cringey and forced to me, idk. No argument, just don't like it I suppose.

>>

>>83949735
oops forgot pic
>>
>>83949331
i haven't read any reviews on it, but i was under the impression that it didn't sit well with most critics, i don't see it being well received overall

i understand that you didn't like the static images and asl, and i think slow cinema is not easy, and weerasethakul is slow to the extreme
but to me those static images make the film almost like an essay film, but the director removes the narration
i also found it was quite hypnotic, i think it's 2 hours and a half and at no point did i feel bored
i dont think there's any buildup to anything in the film (maybe you mean before his death?)
>>

Casablanca is one of those movies I think you have to be older to really 'get.' It's all about heartbreak and regret and being mature enough to do the right thing despite those feelings. >>83949331
It's a complicated movie. For me it was about the artificiality of the modernity that has several effects - the war (which is the most obvious one), the destruction of the environment (the photograph sequence of the forest), the ephemeral seek for pleasure and love (the princess scene), the consequences of entertainment, that makes yourself don't live (the buddist scene, where he is watching the tv and at the same time is hanging out). Uncle Boonmee can only die in peace when he's in contact with nature, and that's told via cinamatography rather then dialog, like most things in the movie.

Joe is a difficult filmmaker, like Reygadas as well, and his work is very divisive but I really like him. I also loved Syndromes and a Century.
>>
John Wick, some trite shit.
>>
I liked it but it's not the second coming of Hard-Boiled like a lot of people make it out to be.
>>
I came into this thread expecting examples (with reasoning behind them) of films that people didn't really seem to understand why were received so positively. Instead the thread is filled with people being contrarians for the sake of being contrarian, whose hatred of the films they dislike can easily be explained by the hatred of people, or specifically the people who enjoyed said films. These "film-goers" base the entirety of their opinion and enjoyment of a motion picture on whether or not other people liked it and what kinds of people liked it. It's pathetic. You know who you are, do us all a favor and kill yourselves.

This movie is fucking awful.
I tried to understand the "hype" so i looked into the essays that turned the critical reception around.
They are borderline incomprehensible. Just a bunch of shit about the "male gaze".
Not only do the original essays that supposedly justify the truly horrid pacing and repetitiveness do a terrible job of conveying how the male gaze somehow warrants a reexamination, but literally nobody since has been able to either.
People just vomit buzzphrases like male gaze back and forth into each others mouths forever and ever jacking off to their own superiority for liking one of the most boring and pointless films ever made.
Hitchcock's worst desu.
Its an absolute disgrace that people rate this higher than Rear Window and Strangers on a Train.

This is something literally only juvenile retards believe. And i've seen it time and time again without fail. The people who don't "get" Hitchcock are very young teens who don't even have the slightest bit of knowledge about cinema, it's history, the development of cinematography, film theory, nothing. nigga i love hitchcock
I didnt realize you have to love literally every single thing a director makes to be a true fan.
Once again though heres another example of a vertigo apologist who has failed to explain why it was ever worthy of re examination.
I get it with the cinematography. Any junior high school kid who likes movies knows he revolutionized camera work, after all the dolly zoom is sometimes called the vertigo zoom. But beyond being a footnote in the history of how people found creative ways to use cameras, i see absolutely nothing of value to this film.
Best movie of all time? Its not even the best Hitchcock movie of all time. Its not even the best movie in its genre. Its not even the best James Stewart movie. Its not even the best movie from 1958.
Its not fucking anything.
And please dont come at me with muh male gaze unless you happen to be one the person on earth who can explain why that makes the film better.

>Seven Samurai

i'm okay with this because most people who call it a masterpiece don't even know why it is a masterpiece, the same goes with Tarkovsky, i want to beat the shit out of people who just say "oh yes, it's an amazing film, beautifully shot"

to "appreciate it" (not to "get it", is really just a regular film in terms of plot and shit, inb4 revolutionary for that time) you NEED technical knowledge, Kurosawa is a great director and his movies are technical masterpieces, but to be honest, who gives a fuck about the story? they're kinda shit t b h, samurais are gay

Dreams is his best and yes, i've been to film school and yes it was a waste of time because i probably won't make any money but i've learned how to watch a film "objectively" and not just "i liked it" or "didn't like it" which is 90% of /tv/'s posts

I guess I figure it out with how different the feelings were about the first wife from the husband and the maid.

The maid was obviously kind of nuts, so you couldn't trust what she said.

the acting is pretty good but yeah, it's mostly a landmark film for cinematography, set design, effects etc. The score was good too. But yes not writing. People want movies and vidya to be set in a universe like that more than they want the actual movie or god forbid a remake.

i still liked it tho

but you never really got what the feelings were from the husband. he was always either looking forlorn or straight up triggered whenever rebecca was mentioned, which would be reasonable behavior for someone who lost their spouse. and all the family friends and shit all seemed to love rebecca too.

You're not alone. It's a boring, stupid flick that's poorly shot and has even worse editing.

It's just a well-made film. The acting is outstanding, top to bottom, cinematography is really good, engaging story. People criticize it for being too naked in its ambition or having its 'meaning' too spelled out, but there was never a deeper meaning to begin with. It's just a well made homage to noir and old LA and one of the last great noir films of that style in its own right. It's a very American film, even with Polanski directing.

I like Seven Samurai for more reasons than I can list... a few being: well-laid out battle scenes that actually emphasize strategy; awesome acting performances from every major character; great character of Kambei who epitomizes nobility; interesting themes of class struggle (in which no side is presented as clear good or evil); awesome film-making technique (cutting, camera placement, etc.).
