Worst season so far. That last episode was so poor. Varga and Nikki's encounter in the hotel was like fan fiction or something, what happened to the writing?

>it was a summer wedding, mostly mosquito's were the guests

Who fucking says that? Made me fuckin cringe. Compare Varga to any of the Gerhardts or Malvo, or Meemo to Hanzee. The Russian guy was mildly interesting but he's gone now apparently. Meemo is so one dimensional it hurts. Oh DAMN he wears ear buds and DANCES, thats so dope. And compare the Blumquists to the Stussy's... boring. Hopefully if theres another season they light a fire under the writers' asses.

Season 1 had the cop pair as the good guys with everyone else grey, stupid or evil.

Season 3 has gone full good vs evil with a bit of grey mixed in. The intrigue and surprises are almost gone.

Hopefully this is the reason but other than Shea Whigham the other cop is a literally retarded. He obviously hasn't told Gloria his encounter with Yuri yet.

In S1, Saul Goodman was friends with John Watson so he was slightly blind to what was going on. Plus he got easily distracted but as the evidence piled up he saw shit was going on.
Key and Peele were retards too but they knew they were onto something.

In S2, any cop not Patrick or Ted were inept but they established that the other cops were semi-corrupt to the Gerhearts or at least shitscared of the family to do anything. Also it's likely Kansas City influenced them. But when shit hit the fan they couldn't ignore anything anymore could they?

Next week is last episode. By this time the other seasons cops had wised up. Hopefully Noah Hawley doesn't handwave this away.

Not to mention she was the driving force behind all the craftiness she and Ray pulled on Emmit.

You could argue that that's because they're on different sides of the law
The police have to follow rules, and so just setting up a guy to explain away the murders is easy and since he confessed to the crime and has plenty of circumstantial evidence, they can do nothing but accept that it was him
Trying to fight against people who don't follow any rules can be much more difficult, especially when those two people hold on to files that could drain you of all the money you've earned throughout your life

>They dont even bother explaining how Nikki and Wrench got around to finding Varga and knowing the exact spot to ambush him.
What do you think happened in the 3 month time lapse?
They could have easily found the location of the truck by staking outside of the Stussy lots building until they see Memeo or Varga leave and follow them to it's location

MEW braging about not showing all her cards then leaving the room with said card while turning full mary sue and Gloria exposing the subtext of her arc disappointed me greatly. Episode 8 felt like a proper climax but most of this episode was very bland. I have a hard time seeing how episode 10 will make things exciting again in less than an hour

>I can help!

;_;

I'm really enjoying this season so far. The first few episodes were the weakest and it seems to be getting stronger every episode - the one with BBT narrating and musical cues for each character being the peak so far. Compare this to the other two seasons where quality declined as they progressed - usually with the finale being the worst.

The last episode had me fucking riveted. I was curious as to what Nikki and Wrench were up to for three months. I assumed it was them tormenting Emmit with the stamp photos. But then that grenade scene, when Wrench came out with the assault rifle, I literally said "holy shit" out loud. Which is something this show, not just this season, has made me do more than once. Probably why I respect it so much.

>>83936170

You're a dumbass. One of her earliest schemes is dropping an air conditioner in *her apartment* on a motherfucker's head while she's already on parole and dating her PO. I wouldn't necessarily call her or Wrench "good". They were on a prison transport ffs.

I'm also liking Gloria more and more, even as she gets shit on. Carrie Coon is a qt pie and a good actress. I find her much more compelling and likable than, say, the fat broad from S1. Who was just annoying and aggressive.

She's working with Wrench, who's not just a hitman, he's a DEAF hitman, so his competency in all this is probably double the usual sort to compensate.
Nikki has a she-boner for strategy and the like, that's why she plays bridge and she spelled it out for Varga (and mongoloids like you.) She gets wet on the sort of wheeling and dealing stuff, that's why she kept pushing Ray to get the stamp. She doesn't give a fuck about money, she's just in it for the ride. She could have told Paul to fuck himself and bailed with Wrench to Canada and disappeared, but instead she spent three months working a scheme to get vengeance for Ray and bring down Varga, and have a good time doing it.

He's not even a character. He's a force of nature. And while that might make for some fun opposition, it makes him no greater a 'villain' than the twister in 'Twister'. He does the things he does and impacts on the protagonists simply to move the plot along.

At least Hanzee had an epiphany, and his final rampage was inspired by a proper, human motivation. You can admire a flat character for the obstacle they present, but don't go around pretending he's some masterfully written antagonist.

I like the show underlying theme of showing the world through great (and often well-done) manichean archetypes, and the absurd situations are quite fun.

But last episode was a bit ham-fisted on biblical references, the saying "the greatest trick the Devil ever played" is a bit worn-out and the two lady cops who say "Jesus always wins in the end"? You really can't be more obvious than that.

That's just in the last one, I still don't quite know what to think of the wandering Jew scene. It was a bit unexpected.

When has Fargo ever dropped the unreliable narrator? Every single episode, right from s01e01, starts with a farcical statement of its trueness. I mean, you didn't actually take 'This is a true story' at face value, did you, you sweet summer child? It's clearly an ironic statement (and one that has become more obvious as the series has progressed). If you're taking everything that happens on the screen as gospel, you're really only getting half the show.

I think Season 2 is the best so far, and I actually quite like the aliens as a narrative mechanic, but let's call a spade a spade: they certainly operated as a deus ex machina. Lou was pinned under Bear and there was no conceivable way that Bear would let him live, until the lights of the hovering alien spacecraft distracted him. That's well within the definition of a deus ex machina.

The real question is: was it justified? I think the split in opinion is between the people who treat Fargo primarily as a black-comedy, and people who treat Fargo primarily as a crime-drama. No one's laughing at the aliens, obviously, but they play into the absurdity of the metaphysical elements the series loves to flirt with. And personally I think they invite the deepest reading of any element of the series to date.

>>
>>83948700
You skipped the keyword: 'primarily.' It's not solely either thing.
>>
>>83948634
But a deus ex machina is a narrative device that writers use when they are cornered and can't find a way out to save their main character. The only thing the ufo did was distract Bear for a second. Literally anything else could've done this (say, a character is driving a car and gets killed and the car keeps going and runs over Bear). Or the characters could have just left Lou out of that situation or write him in a different situation he could've got out of on his own. They wrote the fight that way because they wanted to show the UFO and they wanted it to be a key element of that showdown.
>>
>>83948753
i didnt miss it, reread the post. fargo is a crime drama with larger than life events/happenings overlaid with the comedy of midwestern quirk that together with the fucked up crime that happens, results in a serious crime drama with some black comedy elements. aka, primarily crime drama with some black comedy

I'm confused about the old Asian guy the cops apprehended. Did Varga hire this old asian guy to get captured and go to prison? I know that that is a real thing in life, but for a multiple homicide that would mean life in prison? Doesn't add up, unless they were planning on breaking him out of prison, in which case it would also make no sense, because that would put the cops on the trail of Varga as why the fuck would some random guy killing people with the last name Stussy for being raped by a guy named Stussy have the resources to get him out of prison? It just makes no sense at all, unless the Asian guy just likes living in Prison and didn't care if he was locked up for life.

>The only other thing she did was rightfully guess that Varga was running things and not someone else

That would make more sense and be in line with who Varga is, but there's nothing in the show that leads the viewer to think this, it's just head cannon.

He seemed to not give a shit when he was arrested at all, making me think he was a part of the plan, not someone Varga was extorting.

Yeah I remember the cop saying something like that, but that's only based on what the Asian guy must have told the cops when he was interrogated, so the truth still isn't clear.

You mean the woman played by Mary McDonnell?

By the way I still totally would a Mary McDonnell, top tier GILF
>>
>Strong woman character magically avoids death half a dozen times with the last time literally being saved by an omniscient Jew sent to judge her attacker
>Deaf assassin suddenly becomes the lapdog of said strong woman in a half-cocked scheme to bring down a crime lord's entire enterprise with almost no personal gain involved an extremely high chance of death
>Crime lord is actually impressed with this incredibly retarded plan and could have just had the restaurant filled with assassins and killed them both but instead brings only an asian manlet for protection and offers her a management position job in his crime syndicate
I still like the show and they have used deus ex machina saves before with the AYYYYs, but this is getting really hard annoying.

Yuri's death could have very well just been bleeding out, the bowling alley scene is more for exposition

>Deaf assassin suddenly becomes the lapdog
What else is Wrench going to do now that his m8 for life is dead? MEW probably told him she had a plan to get back at him and make money

>with almost no personal gain involved an extremely high chance of death
What is a million dollars (assuming they split it halfway)

>Crime lord is actually impressed with this incredibly retarded plan
Varga didn't expect such competency from her, also it's clearly not retarded if it worked

>and killed them both
he could only kill them if they brought his data which they hadn't. Why do you think Memeo didn't take a shot?
>>
>>83949256
the obsession with strong women is really getting out of hand
you could complain she's being too clever, but clever women still happen sometimes
other than that, she's not "strong", she uses her charm and wit to get things done and actually gets absolutely rekt in any direct physical confrontation
>>
>>83949256
>>Strong woman character magically avoids death half a dozen times with the last time literally being saved by an omniscient Jew sent to judge her attacker

How did bar God save her? And why is he Jewish?

>>Deaf assassin suddenly becomes the lapdog of said strong woman in a half-cocked scheme to bring down a crime lord's entire enterprise with almost no personal gain involved an extremely high chance of death

It's pretty obvious he's been bumming around the Midwest committing petty crimes for no real gain for the past few years, his best mate and partner is dead and so are his former employers. Varga's men tried to kill him too, and stealing millions of dollars is hardly "no personal gain", is it?

>>Crime lord is actually impressed with this incredibly retarded plan and could have just had the restaurant filled with assassins and killed them both but instead brings only an asian manlet for protection and offers her a management position job in his crime syndicate

Do you actually believe there was a job? He was trying to get her to drink a cup of coma tea ffs.

Well how the fuck many does she have left? she has had a ridiculous amount of saves this season.

>Wrench wasn't the strategist in his season 1 duo with Numbers either
This doesn't explain why he would agree to be her partner on this cockamamie plan, last time we saw him he was completely disillusioned with this type of life and now he is jumping right back in for no reason other than the satisfaction of helping m'lady.

>implying those look alikes were assassins
I am assuming you meant they weren't here and are assuming that he DID have it filled with assassins. If that were the case why wouldn't he have have just told them to kill them as they both walked past him on the way out? Wrench was stupid enough to show his face.

I don't necessarily disagree. Whenever the aliens cause something to happen, there is another logical explanation you could apply to the happening. But as it's presented it falls within the realm of the deus ex machina.

You clearly don't know what a deus ex machina is. Do you think the writer was sitting in front of his desk and tearing his hair out because he had written himself into a corner when Bear attacked Lou? No. He could have just made Bear die from the gunshot to the head. The UFO was purely a choice he made to improve the story. A deus ex machina is the Lotr eagles or the bacteria in War of the Worlds. Thanks to the Fargo UFO I've seen people try to use shit they read on TVtropes a million times. And they always get it wrong.
>>
>>83949694
My point is that it's not really a DEM if you can easily write yourself out of it. Just because it saves a character doesn't mean it's a DEM.
>>
>>83949594

>The term has evolved to mean a plot device whereby a seemingly unsolvable problem is suddenly and abruptly resolved by the inspired and unexpected intervention of some new event, character, ability or object. Depending on how it is done, it can be intended to surprise the audience, to bring the tale to a happy ending, or as a comedic device.
>"Aliens bailed Lou out, oho, I didn't expect that" is by definition deus ex machina

I mean, we're not actually trying to pretend that it literally means an intervention from god or something, are we?
>>
>>83949931
>Deus ex Machina are solutions to a problem. They are never unexpected developments that make things worse, nor sudden twists that only change the understanding of a story.
>Deus ex Machina are sudden or unexpected. This means that even if they are featured, referenced or set-up earlier in the story, they do not change the course of nor appear as a natural or a viable solution to the plotline they eventually "solve".
>Deus ex Machina are used to resolve a situation portrayed as unsolvable or hopeless. If the problem could be solved with a bit of common sense or other type of simple intervention, the solution is not a Deus ex Machina no matter how unexpected it may seem.
>Deus Ex Machina are external to the characters and their choices throughout the story. The solution comes from a character with small or non-existent influence on the plot until that point or random chance from nature or karma.

Please never use words you don't understand again
>>
>>83949931
>seemingly unsolvable problem
It doesn't mean an in universe unsolvable problem tho. Yes, Lou was in an unsalvable situation but if another character had hit Bear in the head and saved him, would you all be calling it a deus ex machina? Just because it's a supernatural element (that was hinted all season) doesn't mean it is.
>>

I'm sure the writer knew what he was doing, but I don't think your average viewer expected it.

>if someone hit Bear on the head etc...
By definition it is one when the event is 'inspired or unexpected' So if he Bear was hit on the head by a time-travelling Malvo, I'd call it a Deus Ex Machina. If he was hit on the head by one of the other cops, not so much.

A tieme traveling Malvo would make sense in Fargo set in year 3000, probably. UFOs make a lot of sense in a 70s setting tho. Mostly when we have unreliable narrators, the TRUE STORY framing and the fact that it was adapted from a book about the narrated accounts of true crimes in the mid west.
