they were going to show the whole fight, that takes place over 3 days to a week, but it would have cost too much and is superfluous at the end of the day :(

The fight lasted 10 days. Better that they didn't show the whole thing. Nothing they could film would match what's described in the book.

I would love to see a short film of Gandalf's fight with the Balrog, just for kicks. From the depths of the waters, into the tunnels of the earth where the Nameless Things gnaw at the roots, up the Endless Stair and then the finale on top of Durin's Tower. It wouldn't have worked in the movie because of obvious pacing issues, but it would be cool just to see.
