epic opening. the word is not miss used here.
reminds you of the first movie, drags you straight in and leaves you wanting to see more of that scrap.
they were going to show the whole fight, that takes place over 3 days to a week, but it would have cost too much and is superfluous at the end of the day :(

The fight lasted 10 days. Better that they didn't show the whole thing. Nothing they could film would match what's described in the book.
does the d-day scene from saving private ryan count as the "opening scene?"

I'll never forget seeing it in the theaters when I was a kid.
>movie starts
>Oh man, why are we going back to the Caradhras? (I cried like a bitch when Gandalf fell)
>Is this some sort of flashback? That's weird, we already know what happened here...
>"Fly you fools!"
>music begins, camera follows Gandalf
>Hoooolllllyyyy shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit!!!!!!!
I would love to see a short film of Gandalf's fight with the Balrog, just for kicks. From the depths of the waters, into the tunnels of the earth where the Nameless Things gnaw at the roots, up the Endless Stair and then the finale on top of Durin's Tower. It wouldn't have worked in the movie because of obvious pacing issues, but it would be cool just to see.
