I don't think so.
With the right director who would go against the grain mechanically in making it just dark and murky, I think it could make for something fairly entertaining while still being faithful.
Imagine someone like Sam Raimi, George Miller or Paul Verhoeven handling it. It could be the most depressing shit ever put on film, yet you'd be exited to go further down the rabbit hole. Too bad Excalibur/Blade Runner era Ridley Scott didn't get a shot at it though. Would probably have been an one shot, and way more depressing than I was proposing earlier. But it would be a film still talked about.

Elric is not always a badass. He is at times pathetic and low. Tom's good at both.
