Seasons 1&2 are GOAT
Season 3 is the beginning of the decline, but it's still watchable as opposed to S4

I personally can't stand S3 because it clearly lacks the "Mann" look/feel because he was starting his other show

Season two has a lot of weak episodes though, like the Voodoo one with Clarance Williams III. I'm rewatching the series and five episodes into S03 and every episode is strong. Season one is best overall, IMO.

But you're right, looking back season 3 is sturdier than I remember. There are even a few good eps in season 5 but I still consider season 4 to be pretty unwatchable
