it is right before he reaches the end point of his journey, and it just screws with the buildup.

in the redux, shit gets weirder, and weirder, and more surreal, then BAM. french plantation scene for like 30 fucking minutes. then BAM back to the weirdness as he reaches the end. and its just.. ruined. it kills the vibe.

Agreed. Also, the plantation scene is extra-weird because Willard is a murderer - he killed that girl on the boat rather than take her to a hospital. That scene is vital to making the audience dis-identify with Willard, thereby preventing the film from falling into cliche "Hero's Journey" territory. Giving Willard a "characters eat around a table" scene and then a love scene plays havoc with the murderous ethos and vibe that the film otherwise builds up.

all in all, i think kurtz was sane. he was still lucid and i think he was playing a deity character because that's what it took to get the Montagnards to do his bidding. kurtz represented what the war might've looked like if it was stripped of all the political BS and our desire to hold the moral high ground. he represented what it might take to convince the north to abandon its aim of taking the south. the VC/NVA (via the horror story) showed that they were willing to do, and kurtz figured out that in order to win against this particular enemy he needed to be even more barbaric.

The Doors' music, with its themes of pagan ritual and death, is a perfect fit for this film. One of the most inspired soundtrack choices of all time. The moody synth stuff in other scenes works very well, too.
