This to be honest pham.

Theatrical first then Redux at a later date. Redux changed the whole vibe of the movie for me, went from grimdark psyche thriller to surreal sitcom.
>>
>>83906294
The Redux version is on Netflix I think and is the literal only way to watch this movie completely. It may have been Coppalla's most ambitious work ever.

OP READ HERE!!!!!!

watch the theatrical version. it is one of the rare times that the theatrical version is better than the directors cut.

the Redux adds a french plantation scene. Coppola wanted it to be SO out of place that it highlights just how surreal the entire journey is.
but... it kills the momentum of the movie.

i dont want to spoil it for you if you havent seen it yet. but the entire movie is about literally descending into madness as he goes further down the river, and the french plantation scene ruins that journey.

it is right before he reaches the end point of his journey, and it just screws with the buildup.

in the redux, shit gets weirder, and weirder, and more surreal, then BAM. french plantation scene for like 30 fucking minutes. then BAM back to the weirdness as he reaches the end. and its just.. ruined. it kills the vibe.

watch the theatrical. its a masterpiece

I've only seen the redux and coppola accomplished exactly that. I thought that those scenes were all hallucinations by martin sheen. Actually I thought half the movie was just martin sheen hallucinating.

You're right though the french plantation scene left me more confused and bored than anything
>>
>>83906909
>>83906909
>>83907095
>>83907208

you are all tards.

i understand what he was trying to do with the french plantation scene. Coppola was trying to highlight how these people live in this weird bubble outside of the surrounding chaos. It is meant to be SO SURREAL that it adds to the surrealness of the film.
All of that is true.

But it's too long. It ruins the journey into madness. it is actually TOO out of place. then when it's over and cuts back to finding Kurtz, its like well fuck all the buildup to finding him has been washed away in that fucking plantation scene.

it kills momentum. it kills the journey. its purpose as commentary isnt worth what it takes away from the film
>>
>>83907303
I should add I've only seen the movie once and it was when I was like 15 so I might think differently on second viewing
>>
>>83906294

Theatrical. Anybody claiming Redux knows nothing about pacing.
>>
>>83907211
finding a mansion on a plantation in the jungles of southeast asia is madness. conversing with frenchmen in full suits and evening dresses during the vietnam war is madness. fucking a french colonists' sister on the eve of you assassinating a special forces colonel from your nation is madness. the whole scene is surreal. you're just too fucking pleb to notice it.
>>
>>83906375
>>83906658

>>
Redux but skip the plantation scene. Boring as shit, ruins the flow of the movie, and they're impossible to understand. If you do watch it make sure you have subtitles for that part

Wait, you don't think that the plantation scene was weird? You must be a muppet.
As you said, shit gets weirder and weirder and then BAM, french plantation out of nowhere. A super sidequest about frenchies in the jungle, war situation and colonialism synopsis, boobies, opium... I mean, what's the matter with you?
>>
>>83906324
But theatrical doesn't have the Playboy bunnies sex scenes.
>>
>>83907306
im sorry your so OCD about tensions built inside momentum itself

but maybe if you try to watch the redux version ago, and see how, while true the plantation is a long scene it acts as way station into the the final scene of the temple, and if you can see it as this, then when you're viewing the temple retrospectively hold onto the visuals and movements in the previous plantation scene and see juxtapositions and parallels

i still feel it works out nicely and gives me the final edge and kiss on my balls before this movie lets me release all my hot sloppy cum
>>
>>83907211

Redux is not a director's cut. Coppola removed those scenes on his own.

He wasn't 'insane' at all, he'd just lost his conscience.

He was also 100% right btw. I'm not saying that the methods he advocated were worth carrying out, but if winning the war had been as important to the US government as it seemed to be, they would have listened to Kurtz. Their mistake was thinking they could win without getting their hands dirty.
>>
>>83908908
on the field of battle, the Allies and Axis were pretty equal in their brutality, both sides committed mass bombings on civilian targets and military infrastructure that killed millions, the bombings of Dresden and Tokyo killed more than the atomic bombs. The only difference between the allies and axis was how they treated their prisoners, and the Soviets were arguably the worst. 95% of the enlisted men who were captured at stalingrad died in labour camps
>>
>>83908077
what a well thought out and compelling argument

according to wiki:
> These scenes were removed from the 1979 cut, which premiered at Cannes. In behind-the-scenes footage in Hearts of Darkness, Coppola expresses his anger, on the set, at the technical limitations of the shot scenes, the result of tight allocation of resources. At the time of the Redux version, it was possible to digitally enhance the footage to accomplish Coppola's vision.

The real autism is believing that the movie intends you to "agree" with either side. Its not about the story, its about what war does to the human psyche. In the end, Sheen is well on his way to be as bad as Kurtz, hes just still on the "good" (american) side.
>>
>>83909467
I asked you to explain why he was wrong, you haven't done so, I'm guessing because you can't.
>>
>>83909470
You aren't supposed to agree with Kurtz's ideology either. You are supposed to reflect his fall into the depths of his own insanity, how his humanity was chipped away. You aren't supposed to go "hey, he sure was smart."
>>
>>83909501
You're a retard, he's wrong because look at what Kurtz believes, look at how separated he is from reality. That's the point. The man advocates literal genocide, what other proof do you want? That's enough.

>>
>>83906294
Theatrical. It's a greater work of art. Then after you've absorbed it, at some point down the road watch Redux. Redux is cool, but the stuff it adds doesn't make the movie greater art, and it ruins some of the mystery and pacing.
>>
>>83909996
Then you realize how your attitude is not something the military would let you go into combat with without a psych evaluation.
>>
>>83908992
They would have won the war and lost the much more important moral high ground in the global fight vs the Soviets... which the West did come close to losing anyway, because of what they did in Iran, Central America, and so on. But resorting to more atrocities in Vietnam to win might have sunk the West's moral authority too low to recover.

Holy fuck, just answer the question directly you fucking imbecile.

Let me tell you why you won't; because you know Kurtz was right. Exterminating the Viet Cong and their sympathisers would have removed all resistance to American forces, thus winning the war.

You're the kind of idiot who would charge onto a battlefield and tell the soldiers to stop firing, because 'murder is what 'edgelords' do!'

Fucking kill yourself, idiot. Or failing that, learn how to debate.
>>
>>83906294
Original cut with the theatrical ending credits
>>
>>83907211
Agreed. Also, the plantation scene is extra-weird because Willard is a murderer - he killed that girl on the boat rather than take her to a hospital. That scene is vital to making the audience dis-identify with Willard, thereby preventing the film from falling into cliche "Hero's Journey" territory. Giving Willard a "characters eat around a table" scene and then a love scene plays havoc with the murderous ethos and vibe that the film otherwise builds up.

tbf i thought the scene was there to set up the hypocrisy monologue about blowing them in half and then giving them a bandaid. willard told them not to search the boat. he was ignored, the crew stupidly freaked out and killed a bunch of innocents but are appalled when willard finishes off an already wounded woman.
>>
>>83910197
>we need to literally exterminate all of the sympathizers, just short of total genocide
Yes, because that has worked in every single case with American conflicts...

Al-Qaeda, Taliban, ISIS, NRA, Syrian Rebels...I'm sure all you have to do is just kill them all to win, then they stop fighting all together. That's def how this works.

That's not a grade school-tier concept of gureilla warfare at all!

I agree... I think it's both. Not that I think Coppola necessarily did that consciously, but it's a stroke of genius to have that scene in the movie, wherever the inspiration came from. It prevents us from seeing Willard as a hero.

>>83910434

Yes, I can.
>>
>>83910400
should've clarified, i'm referring to the dog/boat scene, not plantation

all in all, i think kurtz was sane. he was still lucid and i think he was playing a deity character because that's what it took to get the Montagnards to do his bidding. kurtz represented what the war might've looked like if it was stripped of all the political BS and our desire to hold the moral high ground. he represented what it might take to convince the north to abandon its aim of taking the south. the VC/NVA (via the horror story) showed that they were willing to do, and kurtz figured out that in order to win against this particular enemy he needed to be even more barbaric.
>>
>>83910446
It really was genius. The crew did far more harm in that scene than Willard did, but because it wasn't on purpose, it's somehow okay. They shot up a bunch of uninjured civilians because they were jumpy, and he shot one wounded woman (who may not have survived the trip the hospital anyway) to salvage his mission. In terms of pragmatism, I side with Willard 100%.
>>
>>83910651
Why even side with Willard, though? At the end, it turned out that his mission was to kill a sickly-looking guy who it seems would have died pretty soon anyway from one cause or another - "Even the jungle wanted him dead..."
>>
>>83910754
I side with him in that scene because if the chief had listened to him, everyone on the vietnamese boat would still be alive. reminded me of the "that's why we can't take kids" scene in saving private ryan.

this
all those scenes with the doors and tomita's "venus" are amazing and honestly should have been left in. some really psychedelic scenes like lance standing on top of the boat dancing or martin sheen stabbing a baby should have been left in.
the bootleg i saw came with that really spooky winnie the pooh parody at the end.

The context that the plantation provides is irrelevant to the journey upriver to kill Kurtz

Coppola wanted it deleted when he finished shooting it

Redux, preferably in the early morning while sleep deprived and running on adrenaline.

Theatrical, Redux, workprint... whatever version you watch, it's astonishing to see a big budget Hollywood movie that was made from purpose and vision (chaotic and improvisatory as the process of making it was)... after these modern years of seeing Hollywood die creatively.

Not all films are meant to make you feel joy.

The Doors' music, with its themes of pagan ritual and death, is a perfect fit for this film. One of the most inspired soundtrack choices of all time. The moody synth stuff in other scenes works very well, too.
>>
I've watched Redux not some time ago. Didn't feel like 4+ hours long at all.

Redux but fast forward through the French plantation scene.

It adds literally nothing to the film beyond showing one of the guys on the boat's funeral and even that isn't really worth the time.

watch the theatrical first, then the deleted scenes which are interesting but needlessly slow down an already slow-paced movie.

>fast forward
