Was the poetry in this film actually supposed to be taken as "good"? I generally just found myself laughing at it.

It's actual poetry by some professional poet. I wasn't really enthralled by the poems either but I think they fit the character of Paterson and that's all that really mattered to me.
Also, while Jarmusch isn't a right-wing or conservative at all, Paterson is easily the best conservative film of the last ten years.
>pushes traditional gender roles
>has a comfortable admiration for Eisenhower-era America
>glorifies no degenerate behavior. the one character who comes close is instantly squashed
>realistically portrays the vices and virtues of being working class

Yeah, I guess that's true.
But what the fuck are you talking about with the rest of your post? His wife is literally Iranian. Also, when he's at the theater he looks around and notices a gay couple holding hands.

It's still a Jarmusch movie my friend. Iranians were the original Aryans. And the rest of my point is still valid.

Only to a vague degree...? Like, the wife has aspirations of becoming a working woman which she could plausibly reach considering she seemed to be making good progress in her goals while Paterson was pretty much settled into his routine. Also, Paterson's friends are chiefly black people which is very unconservative.

You're just prejudiced. The wife had no aspirations of working beyond her domestic bliss. She was happy to support Paterson in everything he did and even gave him his own place to work in the house that she never set foot into. You misread the movie quite absurdly.
