What does /tv/ think of this?

Just watched it recently, it was nice, but not as great or smart as it was made out to be.

Did I make a mistake by watching the directors cut first?

Highly entertaining with some cool themes. Sure it attracts the edgy teen audience but its still good.

perfectly captures the slightly pretentious disillusionment of your late teens

if you watched this for the first time when you were aged 15-19 it probably was highly relateable and you loved it
