The lost potential in the new SW sequels is just pitiful.

What if, after years of war, the galactic empire's remanants simply wanted to give up fighting the last dredges of the imperials? What if what we saw as the 'resistance' was actually just a fanatical splinter group led by Leia trying to purge the First Order? What if the rest of the galactic empire was torn between ending the threat once and for all and simply capitulating for peace, reasoning that the first order was no longer a threat? What if we had a complex counterplay where our once beloved heroes are now questioned as villains and the once iron fist of the empire is portrayed as weak and frail? It would've made why the fucking 'resistance' existed in the first place a lot more reasonable than the 'muh reasons' we got for why the republic fleet was somehow separate from the rebels and why no one seemed to care that the first order was around.
