>I've had some readers complain about my name being featured on the covers of the Wild Cards books because I "didn't write them." That's a bullshit complaint, IMSHO. No, I am not the sole author of the Wild Cards stories, I am only one of... ah, lemme see, I believe it was forty-one writers at last count.

I am, however, the editor of every single one of the twenty-three volumes published to date, and the new ones in the pipeline as well... It's a lot more work than any other sort of anthology, believe me... though I love it, so I don't complain... too much. I earn those credits, and to suggest that my name is just being 'slapped on' the covers while someone else does the work is as ignorant as it is offensive.

Besides which, I DO write for Wild Cards, in addition to editing the series. More so in the early days, admittedly, before Westeros and Ice & Fire arose to eat up almost all of my writing time. Truth be told, I'd love nothing better than to write some more Wild Cards stories. I have some old favorite characters I'd love to revisit (Popinjay, the Turtle), and some newer characters that I've hardly written about at all (Lohengrin, Hoodoo Mama)... and I have stories to tell. But all that will need to wait until I've finished WINDS OF WINTER, and maybe DREAM OF SPRING as well

If you're one of those who hasn't tried Wild Cards because there's not enough of my own writing in it, well, here's your chance to hop in. Because this volume has LOTS of my own writing. The typical Wild Cards mosaic novel features work by half a dozen or more writers and as many characters, but on this outing there were only two of us. DEAD MAN'S HAND is a sort of noir mystery novel, as two very different detectives attempt to unravel a grotesque murder in Jokertown. The stars are Yeoman, the ace of spades vigilante, written by John Jos. Miller... and my very own Popinjay, Jay Ackroyd, a rumpled private eye and projecting teleport.

The Lannister army has no money, very little food, and few experienced soldiers or commanders left. It's commanded by Jaime Lannister, a man who, in his first battle, proceeded to charge the enemy commander personally while his army was cut to pieces all around him, and then spent the rest of the war in chains.

Highgarden and Dorne are pretty fucked up politically but their armies are intact, more so than any other realm in Westeros. Dorne alone is incredibly hard to conquer or attack due to the environment and the nature of their tactics; it's been driven home time and again that the Dornish do not fight "properly" and would gladly fight a very dirty war against any invader if they thought the odds of a stand-up fight were against them. It is pure laziness to show the Lannisters somehow defeating both of them at once.

Eddard had 5 kids, Branden would've had some if he didn't die, they could easily get to that same 12 direct heir number, before going to random branches from all over westeros, like the British throne.

And keep in mind, Brandon died at 20, Lyanna around 17, and Benjen taking the black as soon as Eddard came back from RR is suspicious as hell, maybe some hands were forced here...

If this doesn't happen, they could have 15-20 Stark kids by themselves... MORE than the direct kids from the british succession. But war happened.

In the books the houses are described as being thousands of years old, and GRRM does seem to have a lot of children survive infancy in his books. Having branches actually avoids that problem. The other Lannister branch is never really seen as much of a threat to the main Lannister family, and if anything they act as a back up. Plus that branch is actually closely related to the Casterly Rock Lannisters, the same isn't the case for branches that would be far more removed.

The Freys were just an unusual situation and I don't really agree with the Preston theory that they're all fighting each other.

Plus, birth rates wouldn't have been that high to start with and there are generally girls too, which naturally diminishes that problem. No joke - they thought Cercei looked so great in the finale last season that they decided to make her Queensguard wear black, then they did they same thing with team Dany and it just spiraled out of control.

The only characters we see not wearing black is Dany in her mostly red outfit (although she does wear a black one as well), Gendry wears brown, Davos wears his green outfit he always wear (but in the north scenes he has a black coat over it) and Jaime and the Lannister soldiers wear their red armor.
