People always say that but what did Tom really do in The Last Samurai?

He didn't lead them, his side lost and his big act was telling the Emperor about the life of Katsuomoto. People just don't "get" the movie despite it not being that deep. Christ, people still think the title refers to Cruise's character and not Katsuomoto.
