Someone here must either work in film or know how film stuff works. I want to fucking know how they do this 'same actor on the screen twice' thing. Especially with movies coming out now, because they do it so seamlessly.
Now I have searched how exactly it's done however I've gotten a bevy of answers and some seem so far distance from each other that one of them must either be outdated or just untrue.
So I'm asking /tv/. How in the fuck do they do scenes/whole movies like this?
Some notable example movies:
Enemy
Legend
The Double

I assume it's mostly motion capture and layering both shots together. Kinda like how they made Kung Pow

You must be underaged.

The T-1000 steel mill attack and the playground dream yelling through the fence scenes in Terminator 2 were filmed using Linda Hamilton's identical twin sister Leslie Hamilton
this one was done years and years ago and they used a real opposing player who looked and dunked like jordan in his prime
and then layered on young jordan's face in post

Also in the extended edition this isn't actually a mirror. Leslie Hamilton is with the real Arnold Schwarzenegger in the background while Linda Hamilton is working on a dummy in the foreground so they can really emphasize that "she's digging deep into his skull" effect.
I'm more curious how they film mirror scenes where the camera is right behind the actor.
Though I heard all the mirror scenes in the make up room in Birdman was all digitally done, so maybe it's not some big wonder I think it is.

the director's commentary of The Island, Michael Bay says they did the scene with two Ewan McGregors by filming the scene twice, once with each character. The camera was rigged to move the exact same way for each take, making it easy to overlay.
He mentions how Ewan unlocks the other's bracelet, they're not actually touching each other. He just has to hit his mark on time and in the right place.
