Post kino horror. I'll start us off right chaps.
>>
Damn, that movie was beautiful to look at. What enjoyed the most about it, aside from its style, was how it flowed almost like some gothic fairy tale. The ending especially.

Love this film. Pretty strange that a movie from 1981 still has the best werewolf transformation of all time.

I wonder how Max will fuck up the remake that he's planning.
>>
>>83817061
I liked the slow pace and the folkloric shit, plus ambiguity and the unknown/unknowable is always scariest
>>
>>83817265
Event Horizon
>>
It Comes at Night was pretty good. Not the horror movie it was advertised as, but definitely stuck with you.
>>
Del Toro is faux kino.
>>
>>83817334
>Not the horror movie it was advertised as

this gets my autims tingling, I was really looking forward to it. Please don't tell me it's just one of those dudes in the trailer doing something.
>>
>>83817364
I'd still go see it, especially if you enjoy slow paced movies, I was going into it with similar expectations. Its more about the characters and their interactions than any actual horror elements.
>>
>>83817334
Do they not show the 'monster'? Is real horror is created by the characters themselves?
>>
>>83817473
Some spoilers
Pretty much. It has a more in common with The Road than any other horror film.

More spoilers:
The movies leaves a lot of things intentionally ambiguous and doesn't answer many questions. Its highly questionable if there even was some monster.

Granted, this movie had it moments of terror, but it felt very cheap in other places. For instance, the costumes. I felt like I was watching Mr. Show's parody of Boogie Nights. The acting was horrible in places too.

One of my favorite Mr Show sketches dubs bro. I'll agree with the acting. I liked the pacing and how long he would draw out terror scenes. The basement scene had me on edge for like 5 minutes. I will agree with >>83817722 that the second tightened up acting and pacing.
>>
>>83816927
I went to the cinema to see Crimson Peak with friends and they all hated it and said it was one of the worst films they'd ever seen :(

It's Hollywood that is shit. They rehash the same old grounds over and over again.Think about how often YOUR definition of horror is ever really realized. Think about how limitless the boundries of terror are, and then look back at the steaming piles of shit we've been given. Is there truly a movie out there that totally encapsulates fear? No! To date, even the so called "noteworthy" ones, only manage to provide us with short gimmicky scenes, and little else. I want a movie that will have me pissing my pants from beginning to end. I want to see unexplored territory and I don't want it sprinkled in there, I want it saturated with scary.

Toad Road is a modern masterbase. Great casting and acting. Excellent atmospheric horror, which has great build up (think disaffected youth drug culture meets Dante's Inferno.) And amazing second half of the movie. I especially think it has the best portrayal of time dilation in any movie I've seen. There are elements of the film that are like a cross between Terence McKenna's True Hallucinations, Heart of Darkness, and Satanism/ the demonic.

I just watched this one today. Not bad. It's not one of those "smart" horror films, but it has some kind of "retro feel" I liked and it doesn't rely on fucking jumpscares. Really nice animatronics, also.
And it seems like they're going to make a sequel also. Maybe.

Nigga it was literally Gothic Horror Novel: The Movie.

That was also why it got so much shit from the start, because the trailers made it look like a modern horror movie instead of a Gothic movie. Then when the viewers got to the actual movie they were disappointed.

Loved it, especially the main actress and the sister character. Audible retching from audience members during two parts, though I was seeing it in NY so who knows what level of irony was being performed.
>>
>>83837625
This. The marketing is to blame on this one. Gothic Romance isn't something that performs well in the US usually, so they got scared and marketed it as straight horror.

It was a good movie. Maybe too much copied on the Bronte's sister works (there are other Gothic Romance writers besides the B-sisters), but good anyway.

Honestly this movie was quite disappointing. It put too much focus on the Gothic elements which detracted from the Lovecraftian ones.

>Thomas was basically Heatcliff

Except for how their personalities were nothing alike, not emotionally and not intellectually. Hell, he didn't even have the undying crazy-strong love for his sister that Heathcliff had for Catherine, which practically the defining part of a Heathcliff character. He cared about his family history, whereas Heathcliff had none and didn't give a shit about it. If anyone's Heathcliff it's the sister, she actually displayed that crazy undying love, even becoming a ghost because of it.

>Wanting to marry for money

That's just something that exist in pretty much every single novel of the era, because marrying for money was a reality.

>Brother/Sister in love
Oh, you're one of those guys who see Heathcliff's love as incestual. I'll grant you that one, then. There's a parallel there.

The rest are simply Gothic novel mainstays and so obviously crop up.
