Why didn't they just fly the eagles into Mordor?
>>
because tolkien is a hack and eagles are a lazy plot device
>>
Tolkien considered the eagles as an explicit plot device and compared using them capriciously to subvert the arduous journey to using a helicopter to fly up Everest when the goal is to climb and conquer it, woop woop juggalo for life mmfwcl.
>>
>>83803800
Because Big Ben would have saw them and summoned the dragon riders to attack. Sure they could have used the eagles later on during the battle to distract the eye, but they were close enough already.
>>
>>83803800
The eagles would have been too easily tempted by the ring.
>>
>>83803800
they would be shot down when they reached mordor, as they explicitly state in the book
>>
>>83803800

Serpents would have stopped them
>>
>>83803800
Eagles are cunts and won't do a job that's easier than picking up a couple of tiny hobbits.
>>
>>83803800
The eagles are divine beings like Gandalf and aren't allowed to use their power to solve the major problems of mortals. They'll save them from wolves and lava, but destroying the One Ring is a trial meant for the ones who are set to inherit middle earth.

Why would they want to kill Sauron?
He only ever wanted to help the peaceful people of Rhûn and Haradrim to get some of the fertile land in the west.

The orcs we're just a tool for the greater good. Who is to say Middle-Earth wouldn't have its own Enlightenment and Industrialization when ruled by Sauron?

You, and the majority of the cast, doesn't even speak his language. Everything we know about his plans and motivations is through tales which are thousands of years old and because of translations from a select group of Elves.

Maybe Sauron had a very good Casus Belli to declare war on Gondor?

He sure seems to at least try to innovate and advance civilization instead of the cuck monarchist in Minas Tirith and Rohan who try to keep the population stupid and under their thumb by providing "protection" to them.

That's fine and all, but if the only hope of saving the world was at the top of Mount Everest the world leaders would probably opt to use a helicopter.

I assume that the ring's enchantments are only as powerful as the one who made it, i.e. Sauron.

So someone with more powerful magic than Sauron could destroy it outside of the conditions its innate enchantment requires, i.e. the fires of Mount Doom.

So why didn't they gather the wizards and get them to collectively use their power to destroy what was in the mystery box

There's like... 7 of them.
Do they have a biological radar which can scan the thousands of square kilometers ranging borders of Mordor?

Most of them are searching for the ring in other areas.

Do they keep an eye on the Eagle's airbase at all time?

Can't the Eagles create a distraction with the other hobbits as bait to get Frodo safely to Mt Doom?

In ROTK one Eagle can easily tear apart a Fellbeast. How many Eagles are there even?

The entrance is slightly below the frame, supposedly the eagles manage to fly up there uninterrupted, they'd most likely be fried and feathers gone when they make it to the tip. Say they endure the high heat and literal fire right next to them, dropping the ring wouldn't work. The ring was forged inside the mountain, not on top of it, so it has be dropped into the bottom lava lake inside. I was saying that the orcs would fill the entrance below completely sealing it so no one would get through.

Difference is, inside there wasn't lava spewing in every direction and fire enveloping the entire area.
In >>83809826, that's precisely the case on top of the mountain, it would be impossible for the eagles to enter close enough to throw the ring inside. And I've been entertaining the idea that there's a direct funnel down to the lava lake from the top. The lake isn't directly accessible as it would make the whole area Frodo and Sam are fighting in at the end full of fire and lava, but alas, looking at the footage it seems to be quite serene as the picture shows.

Despise what the movies have made you believe the eagles don't just come when gandalf calls them.

The eagles where originally par with Gandalf or the Balrogs as maiar (demi gods) which means they join Gandalf when the king of the eagles see it fit or when ordered by the lord of the valar.

Meaning they only do shit when gods (not Gandalf) tell them to do shit. If manwe doesn't say "help Gandalf" they may act like assholes and refuse him.

So yes, Eagles are deux ex machina, which means men and even maiar can not use them as will, they only appear on the whim of the gods.

Why didn't they just fly the eagles into Mordor?

I dunno maybe the thousands of potential archers and dozen nazgul riders would of stopped them before they could drop it into the volcano.

That is assuming they managed to get undetected that close to mordor, otherwise sauron would just pump up security 100% around the volcano itself.

Seeing as the ring being returned to sauron would have been certain doom for middle-earth, maybe they didn't wanna do such a high risk strategy.

Of course, this is also around the time when most factions were fractured, dwarves disliked the elves, the elves had distrust in men due to not destroying the ring in the first place so there goes any chance of teamwork.

Also that the eagles themselves are incredibly arrogant and consider themselves greater than the lives of middle earth and the fact they only really helped frodo/sam when the nazgul were dead and did it as a favour to gandalf, one of the single people in middle earth who they actually like.

But yeah, I guess there is no answer to why they didn't use the eagles, who really knows?

This is a volcano, now if the top is spewing lava and fire 24/7, it means that whatever "tube" there is, is clogged with - you guessed it, LAVA.

We can deduce from this that the place Frodo and Sam were at in the end, was probably not connected to the main "tube" because they would be swimming in lava if that was the case. It was some kind of pocketed area with a view to the lava flow below that fed the main tube.
I hope this has been informative, and whatever doubts you had are cast away.

Obviously it matters that it's located in Mt Doom, but it's dumb to think that the specific chamber of Mt Doom matters. The lava is constantly flowing through all parts of the mountain in some fashion, so anywhere should work, otherwise you get into a crazy slippery slope that eventually requires you to find the actual original lava that was flowing through at the time or some shit.

The fact that anyone would ever consider destroying the ring was inconceivable for Sauron. He is 100% sure that we will eventually get the ring back and whoever else gets a hold of it will try to use it for their own benefit, but ultimately fail and become corrupted by it.

The ring eventually corrupts every bearer and they will in the end not destroy the ring, it was only destroyed by accident.

paratroopers are totally ineffective without a conventional assault to work with, the planes take heavy fire and the troopers are quickly slaughtered if the defense is prepared. They work as dragoons on the battlefield, moving around the back of the enemy and dismounting to support the main army with flanking or rear fire. Without support theyre fucked and useless. Youre asking why a council of cautious, rational people avoided a suicide drop on mount doom through use of a shaky relationship with giant eagles that gandalf happens to be friends with.
When the eagles intervene, its to save gandalf, just like they always had, and they could only actually go into mordor after the witch king and sauron were dead. They attacked the nazgul after their leader was killed with a successful ambushed, basically the perfect opportunity. This makes sense for them to do, defeat a rival and helpba friend at the same time.
This is a much more rational proposition to give to giant army-destroying eagles than "hey dude so like take us right into mordor right past the witch king and sauron basically the most dangerous place in the world with the worst tactical odds and idk hope for the best thx"

They use tactics, theyre smart predatorial animals with finesse, they dont do stupid dangerous shit for no reason and they usually wait until the end of the conflict to swoop in and hit their target with stealth and precision, as a predatorial bird does. More importantly, they help on their own terms, and only intervened to save others, theyre not going to put in that kind of effort unlesd they see that you're actually pulling some weight yourself. As youve said sauron of little threat to eagles that live on giant mountaintops as long as they keep to themselves and only intervene at the bedt opportunities, but thats different that a full frontal charge into enemy territory for the sake of cowards that wont fight for their own land.

Boromir goes on and on about the Gap of Rohan. Despite being so close to Isengard, it was still an option.

wait

why didn't they just take the same path bilbo did in the hobbit to get to the lonely mountain and just sail down the river before mirkwood?

He wrote the book before helicopters existed, lad.
>>
>>83817092
No but seriously, why would you think it was in Rivendell? You thought they took them all the way back there and then travelled back to Gondor for Aragorn's coronation?
>>
>>83817080
Boromir had travelled that way before they knew Saruman was a traitor though.
>>
>>83817041
yes.
>>
>>83803800
the fellbests of the nazgul would have plucked them from the sky
>>

I remember wondering why they made Minas Tirith look like Rivendell but I knew what was up
>>
>>83817770
Probably because they used the same set.

Anyone else find it pretty amazing that the budget for the entire LotR trilogy was around 300 million and now we've reached the point where major summer blockbusters are regularly 250+ mill for just one movie?
>>
>>83817864
back in the 90s, Stargate cost 50 mill and Independence Day like 80, and those look a hundred times BETTER than the 100% CGI wankery of today's blockbusters
>>
>>83816374
Well that makes a whole lot more sense...
I feel like an idiot
>>
>read lotr as kid
>wtf why elves do nothing stupid elves not helping men fight evil
>read silmarillion as adult
>realize humanity is absolute trash
>elves fought evil for thousands of years while humans just gave into it over and over
>Elrond and Galadriel's contributions in LotR are EXTREMELY generous considering how much they'd already given to fight evil only to be betrayed by mankind countless times

Gandalf originally intended to use the eagles to get the ring into Mordor when they got close enough. No one else thought about the idea, but he died before he could tell them. Need proof? His last words to the group were: "Fly, you fools!"
>>
>>83803800
They had a thing, you know? They were free later on, though.

But what were the Eagles' tax policy?
>>
>>83818400
They didn't have tax, they lived a nomadic agrarian hunter/gatherer lifestyle.

Frodo and Sam weren't taken to Rivendell in the book. What are you talking about?
