It's probably the pinnacle of major Western studio animation. There are films that are prettier or have better stories or songs but not many that can compete with it on every front at once.

More likely it is the first one he saw. It is hard to pick a best/favorite but i like mononoke and ponyo. When Marnie was There may he my favorite Ghibli.
