It works on this show because for once, the weird girl gets no attention from males, unlike the tumblr fantasy where the hottest guy in school is in love with you quirkiness.

Gene doesn't come across as feminine sensitive. I can't think of a scene where he has cried, and he doesn't seem that interested in girls and girl stuff. I think what works well is that they act like kids act; not getting adult subjects and subtext unlike most tv shows. I honestly can't believe no one has called them sexist yet, since Lyndia is a dumb bitch who fucks shit up and actually has to deal with her consequences.
