I think that makes it more interesting. Spoilering because this is kind of the whole concept of the book. Hephaestus, like the other gods already established in mythology, came over with someone, with people who believed in him. The point is that to keep on surviving they need faith/belief and that they find it in unorthodox ways. Like the Odin missile being proposed as a way to make millions know his name, or Czernobog drawing his power from sacrifice. In fact, the Vulcan guns/ammo/sacrifice concept is really fucking cool. I think it would have been extremely hokey if Gaiman had created new gods. This sort of roots it in our reality. I love that.

I think the book is better but the series is not that bad, my only complains so far are that Wednesday doesn't look like the book describes him, I don't really like much of the OC they made for the show, and I feel they have condensated too much of the plot.
