I don't get why that stuff would bother you when twin peaks has always been a murder mystery show. How can you complain that the new season has plenty of mystery when that was the entire appeal of the show in the first place? Or at least a major part of the appeal.
>>
>>83791319

>Why can't Lucy understand how cell phones work?

She's stuck in the past because she doesn't want to deal with the fact that his son died, so she clings to the memories of the past and that's why she has such a violent reaction towards technology (cellphones, modern acs (they even put a fake thermostat there because they didn't want to confuse her and that's why that thermostat never works) and that's why they pasted a photo of Michael Cera on their family pic because it's an actor they hired and Lucy thinks (not actually, more like pretending for sanity's sake) that he's their son. That's why Waldo never visits (he has his life to live) and he came to Twin Peaks to grant them permission to turn his bedroom into a study, so he can "travel around the country" (because he has other shit to do) and this way, Lucy can move on from the pain of having lost a son.

If Leland was being blackmailed by Tammy and he found her in Flesh World, then how come he found Laura and Ronnette in there also when he already knew they were fucking around with it? He didn't find shit in Flesh World other than Tammy. He just reverse-engineered their being in Flesh World and figured it out and got some dank letters. Seems mildly weak, I dunno. Ever considered that maybe it comes from a lot of television, movies, books and whatever including some sort of social commentary so that many people started expecting it? I mean, all the way back to Eraserhead all of Lynch's work had social commentary in some form.

Like the start of episode 3, that's one of Lynch's finest work in my opinion. Twin Peaks has always felt like a hit and miss collection of scenes to me - some parts are brilliant, and some are stupid. When looked at individually, the great bits are genius.

I agree with this fag, every second has been entertaining to me. Even the drawn out scenes like painting shovels or Michael Cera, they're funny because it's clear what Lynch's intentions were. I nearly dropped a lung when "SHIT DIGGING SHOVELS" popped up, which is the best "fuck you" red herring I've ever seen. And it's great to see Lynch giving the lore some closure. There must be a lot of elements left from 25 years ago because Jeffries, Briggs and BOB are still huge parts of the plot, despite all their actors being dead. You can tell Lynch wants to be doing this, and it's probably some of his finest work. I dare say that by the time this is over, it may be his magnum opus. I can't even begin to imagine what he has planned for the finale.

Episodes 1-3 were awesome, I liked the new style, all that surreal shit was really nice and I loved getting Lynched.
Episode 4 was more of the real world but all right, got Lynched hard when I saw Michael Cera's face pasted on a black and white family photo of a kid. It didn't get any bluer. Good shit.
Episode 5 was shit really. Half of the episode was Dougie goofing around. It was like some bad comedy flick, pretty annoying.
Is it some post-Lynch stuff that I don't get or is it getting shitty?
Is it even going anywhere? It feels like they shouldn't be wasting an episode on some fillers when they were waiting 26 years to get this one season done.

>>
>>83789939
Good question. It comes from unintelligent people being paid too much money to do too little work in the Western world. Or, to put it another way, the rise of the middle class. Unwilling to devote themselves to aesthetics for long enough to acquire a strong sense of formal meaning - the way that artistic ideas are ideas in themselves, not translations of statements existing outside of the work - they look for simplistic meanings to justify the investment of their time in terms of a Protestant work ethic. So it's okay to love art and seek aesthetic pleasure, because it's a more ennobling version of reading the newspaper.

Probably not, I think Lynch only wrote the first episode and the rest is just being made up by the actors as they go. The best thing to do at this point is stop watching and never come to these threads again, this filler material will probably never end.

Again, there is no way of the hotel knowing where it was mailed from without a return address. It's a dead end like the shovels, it's only purpose to make people in Twin Peaks aware that Cooper must still be out there somewhere.
>>
>>83797715

i don't agree with the theory only because it's too straightforward and boring and unlynchian

but, it does make sense that if he could get the good cooper in a disposable body and then kill him he could expel cooper from the world for good. meanwhile dougie is not wised up enough to come back out of the lodge or cause problems for badcoop.
>>
>>83797477
>It feels like they shouldn't be wasting an episode on some fillers when they were waiting 26 years to get this one season done.

1. Twin Peaks has always been a foreground of Lynch oddities and keks arranged against a background of mostly Frost-written boilerplate. It exists to provide a marketable vehicle for surrealist tangents. None of the plot strands will pay off. The mythos is bullshit. The actual plot events of the entire Twin Peaks saga could be summarized without distortion on a couple of sides of A4. The aesthetic events, on the other hand, are incredibly rich. Everything else is vamping until ready.

2. They weren't waiting 26 years to do this, Lynch is doing it because nobody will fund a new theatrical movie by him. If someone had offered him $50 million to make INLAND EMPIRE 2 at any point before about 2012, this wouldn't be happening.

My subjective whinges about the series:

Andy is completely retarded now (in the series he was portrayed as being simple and a bit sensitive). In the series he was a competent portrait artist and didn't act like a retard all the time.

The effects are hit and miss, some look awesome, but some (like the gold ball's motion) look too amateur. (of course the gold ball effects are for a "manufactured" person so they're supposed to look weird).
Some effects look amazing, like the Arm.

And the lack of a jazz noir score is a bit sad (although this is personal preference). Having something jazzy in the background in most scenes is something I miss. DESU, they should've hired a group that specialises in dark jazz (like the Dale Cooper quartet), to compose / play.

The black lodge is a lot less mysterious and shadowy, in the series and FWWM the lodge has a completely different feeling to it (feels a lot darker, like there's something hiding in the corner). We haven't seen any genuinely mysterious scenes like FWWM's painting scene, which is probably my favourite scene out of FWWM.

There's a shot in the first or second episode where MIKE turns to look at Cooper when there standing in front of the tree, and it's been digitally slowed in post so MIKE moves noticeably choppy. It's very clearly an editing choice and wasn't implied to have meant anything. Sonny Jim's reversed footage will turn out to be the same thing.
>>

I wouldn't be surprised.

agree with these too. the show has shed its too cool for school attitude, and the black lodge is no weirder than the outside world so it all feels the same bar weirdness.

evil coop anticipated that there were going to be problems with two coops in the same universe so he arranged for his clone to be killed after he switched with good cooper.

It's not even a theory it's pretty straight forward that evil cooper arranged for his clone to be killed after the switch. Why the fuck would bad cooper leave the good dale roam about.

I'm going to tell you guys a true story, with rather specific detail, whether you believe me or not is up to you:

>Going to Japan with my family on Monday
>Stop in LA to visit relatives from Friday-Sunday
>Today (Saturday) go to the Special Olympics in Long Beach to cheer on my low-functioning autistic cousin who's competing
>See David Lynch
>Go up to him and tell him I how I love his stuff
>Telling him how I just re-watched Mulholand Drive and haven't gotten a chance to watch nu-peaks yet
>He cuts me off
>"Don't bother, it's goofy."
>What
>He tells me has to go and leaves, say goodbye, he says bye back
>He just repeats that "It's goofy." as he walks off

???
>>
>>83797813
>The effects are hit and miss, some look awesome, but some (like the gold ball's motion) look too amateur. (of course the gold ball effects are for a "manufactured" person so they're supposed to look weird).

That works, but I don't think the plot justification played any part in the decision, it's Lynch doing an experimental film thing. It looks like animation he did years ago, and in fact I wouldn't be surprised to learn that he had done it manually himself. This series is him bringing all the strands of his artistic life together. We've had spaces clearly built by him, animation done by him, music video episode endings...
>>
>>83797605

Absolutely. But there's some satire on american family values, postindustrial life and cold war nuclear paranoia in there as well.
>>
>>83797813
Those are pretty valid things to dislike so far. I bought into the possible reasoning for some of these things (Andy and Lucy haven't kept up with the modern era, the effects are good enough for me, the lodge is less mysterious since we (and Cooper) have been thinking about it for 25 years), but the music is something I have missed in certain scenes.
>>
>>83797853
> the black lodge is no weirder than the outside world

I think this is more to do with the fact that Cooper's been in there for 25 years, though. He's probably seen all the shit that it's had to offer before it opens up again (which probably consists of watching the dwarf dance for eternity).

You think that's just me reading things into it? Because I can't help but look at, for example, the scene of Henry having dinner with his wifes family and not view it as kind of an absurdist homage to the kind of idealized sitcoms of the 50s and early 60s sitcoms and their view of family life that Lynch probably grew up with.

Or the picture of the nuclear explosion in Henry's apartment not somehow relating to the Cold War fear of nuclear annihilation. Actually, to me it seems like the movies aesthetics in general are kinda meant to invoke a sort of post-nuclear world.

Again, maybe that's just my personal bias but it seems to me like that stuff is there.

>satire on american family values
Lynch was a Reaganite in the 80s. His moving to the left in recent years has a lot to do with California's cultural conflation of New Age, and often low-key authoritarian, mysticism with ultra-liberal politics. He supported Bernie, but he wants TM - a proprietary pseudo-secular version of an essentially Hindu practice - taught in public schools. He thinks the solution to crime waves is prayer, basically.

His depictions of abusive families have been defences of family values, not subversions of them. Leland is horrible because he betrays his trust as a father, not because fathers are horrible. Lynch's narrative elements are always concerned with the struggle to be good against forces he literally conceives of in theological terms. Good exists, and evil exists. This is completely in line with American family values.

Twin Peaks' normality being under attack by various unspoken corruptions is from the fifties soap opera Peyton Place, not an assault on white small-town America, which Lynch unironically loves.
>>
>>83798198
Read the wikipedia page on TM, it's not exactly prayer. Not a shill or anything but it looks like it could help people.
>>
>>83798075
Little Mike did nothing wrong.
>>
>>83797716
I'm 99% sure the entirety of the original Twin Peaks was simply a ploy to get into Mädchen Amick's panties.
>>
>>83798243
I have studied TM and my family certainly noticed a change in me after I'd been doing it for a few weeks. I didn't keep it up because I had no discipline, but since I started working out daily and becoming more disciplined and capable of maintaining a routine I might take it up again.
>>
>>83798060
I think it's you being really bad at reading nuance and having no contextual sense of what the highly political 70s American indie cinema was like. In that context, Eraserhead was read, correctly, as basically apolitical/conservative.

>Because I can't help but look at

Lynch *grew up* in that kind of suburb you can only understand through genre pastiche, and he loved it. Nuclear families are not abnormal in his world. He grew up surrounded by white people who didn't divorce. Mary's family are absurd, but not because Lynch thinks family values are absurd. People thought the ants in Blue Velvet were symbolic of some deeper corruption - no, they're just a different texture in nature. They're about how life is more complicated that the sweetness of suburban appearances, but that's not a judgment on the suburbs, it's just acknowledging that there are different textures in the world, light and darkness - he believes in the light, though his way of depicting it is more nuanced than it used to be, and he loves the texture of decay as itself a natural thing, an organic process generating its own beauty. The man is a Hindu mystic traditionalist in his social values, and a libertarian in his personal life.

>meant to invoke

No, no, no. If you want an explanation for something that doesn't need explanation, they're a way of representing how revolting it was for an Eagle Scout raised in affluent suburbs to live in the inner city around blacks and poor whites without alienating everyone. Reductive, isn't it?
>>
>>83798243
Prayer helps people. It's not likely to solve crime waves, though. I say that as a Christian.
>>
>>83798313
Although I will say the Maharishi Foundation is a fucking cult, and while the technique itself is great I think you should probably find some other way of learning.
>>
>>83797477
Lynch is capable of pissing off the people who expected the new show to feel serious, creepy, and epic like Fire Walk With Me. It's actually a very funny show, but wherever it's leading to, only Maclachian, Lynch, Frost, and Nevins know.
>>
>>83798448
>I think it's you being really bad at reading nuance
On reflection, I'd like to apologize for starting the post with such a strongly dismissive phrase. I think I could have started this more positively, as I mainly wanted to explain why I think you're mistaken, not condemn you for being mistaken.

>Tell friend years ago to watch Twin Peaks
>Tell him when 3rd season is about to come out
>"Hey man I'm watching twin peaks"
>"Oh yeah? which episode?"
>"I'm watching the third season what the fuck is this about"
>>
>>83798198

See, I can get on board with thatI do still think that there is some sort of commentary on small, tightly knit communities hiding corruption behind the harmonic image they project of themselves, or rather that for every genuinely happy family and peaceful town there 's also crime and violence.

I agree that I don't think he's trying to reveal the inherent evil of traditional america or anything and Straight Story shows his fondness for simple, kind hearted people quite clearly but at the same time I don't think that the corruption shown in his other works is just the work of outside forces but something inherent, not in traditional America, but people in general and that it expresses itself in an otherwise peaceful setting.

>>83798448

Contrary to what you might believe, I am more familiar with the places Lynch depicts than what you may believe. I live in a small village in Europe and both Twin Peaks and Blue Velvets Lumberton are places that seem pretty familiar to me.

Of course Eraserhead expresses his view of urban Philadelphia but then again... well, you said it yourself, Lynch finds beauty in decay. He has a genuine fondness for things most find revolting. He himself said he would like to live in the world of Eraserhead so I genuinely think he has some love, maybe nostalgia, for that world.
>>

While the idea of using a random sound vibration as an unspoken mantra is great, once you know that the sound vibrations aren't really random, but have a significance in Hinduism which TM trainers don't tell their pupils (and maybe don't know themselves), you have to find a new mantra which is genuinely meaningless if you want to use it off-the-grid. And if the TM organization's claims about the mantra and the neccesity of their training and method aren't true, maybe the rest of it is dubious too, in terms of its apparent superiority to mindfulness meditation, for example.

>Audrey was confirmed to not appear in the new season
Why would you lie about something that is already widely known?
>>
>>83788845
>it can't be both
>>
>>83798773
Absolutely, but I think his sense of the corruption is not like the Christian sense, where the corruption, though used by the evil one, is part of fallen life, but more like the Manichean sense, where goodness and corruption are both spiritual forces that the mortal being can cleave to/seek or reject/flee from.

>>83798773
I'm glad to hear that, well then, you understand my distinction between interpersonal absurdism, absurdism as a way of looking at the world, and genre parody. He uses genre elements from soap operas massively in Twin Peaks to structure his thinking for a TV audience, but I don't think that's there in Eraserhead.

While he's said he'd love to live in that world, I think he was partly talking about the working world of making that film.

Also, of course, Eraserhead is the textures he could use from Philadelphia and the mood of disquiet, not finally a representation of anything non-formal. But if it were to be, it would be a representation not of a social comment like a more sophisticated version of Richard Lester's The Bed-Sitting Room, but something a little more politically dubious. Fortunately, nobody wants to harrass him about that, and I'm not suggesting we should want to either.

>The only reason why we would have this plot point is if it would help lead to Cooper so I figure there's going to be something that points to where it was mailed from when it arrives.

The key is the missing thing. The key to Cooper's room at the Great Northern was with the real Cooper in the lodge, not the Doppleganger who came back. Hawk will hear about the key to Cooper's room returning to the hotel, somehow he will find out where it was mailed from. He will go to that place and find the Indian casino and realise that's how his heritage is related to it, he will show the casino staff/owners a picture of Coop and ask if they know him, find out about Mr Jackpots, and track down "Mr Jones on Lancelot Dr with the red door".
>>

Mike told Dougie Coop in Ep4 that one of the Coops must die.
Dooper knew this, which is why he had arranged for "Dougie" to be killed on the day that Cooper returned to him.

I really don't think it is. I remember in the behind the scenes doc for Inland Empire, there was a part where one of his assistants or something were high and he noticed and he said something like
>Jeremy, talk to me later. We're gonna get you off that stuff and onto meditation [presumably not charging him for it]
