Marketing, plain and simple, do you remember those teasers and trailers for the Matrix? Shit had people chomping at the bit, some strange contemporary scifi with crazy stunts in a strange but recognizable, Dark City had maybe one trailer starring Rufus Sewell and a bunch of flying Gestapo in the 1950s and no one gave it a second thought

Tho all these numbers are mighty impressive.

Marketing, aesthetics (Dark City is less broadly appealing), star-factor (lead actors still mattered in 1999 and although Keanu was a bit memey, Rufus was a literally-who).
