The Basterds aren't intended to be likable protagonists. I disliked the movie the first time I watched it because I couldn't root for these hyperviolent assholes. Then I realized that you're not intended to like them, and the story is intended more as an exploration of human nature and revenge than a straightforward action script, and it also considers the question of the end justifying the means. The movie is called Inglourious Basterds because that's exactly what they are. It's actually a pretty good movie when viewed with this in mind.

I think that Tarantino faces the problem of wanting to make an unapologetically vigilantic character like those Saints movies or whatever I cant recall the full name of but because he is so well versed in film, subconsciously he realizes that its a very immature concept and probably out of guilt or pride decides to blur the lines a little grayer so it doesnt feel like he veers steeredly towards one way.
