I've never watched Doctor Who, do I just start at the beginning?
>>
>>83732939
You'd be fine starting with Rose (2005) or The Eleventh Hour (2010), the classic run is good but not strictly necessary
>>
>>83732939
Start at Rose, end at series 5 and then watch Day of the Doctor and Heaven Sent

>>
>>83732939
no you start at the credits and go backwards

There are a few starting points.
The very beginning in 1963 if you're autistic
Spearhead from Space from 1970, first Doctor Who in colour. You still have to be pretty autistic to start here
Rose from 2005, beginning of the new series
The Eleventh Hour from 2010
The Pilot from 2017, this series was designed as a jump on point

Alternatively you could pick a Doctor you like the look of and start from them. Or even just tell us which one and we could point you in the direction of some good stories with them
>>
>>83733024
There are also memeovores and Word Lords in Doctor Who.

>>
>>83733031
Why is it autistic to start at the beginning? Why is it autistic to watch something old? What's wrong with you?
>>
>>83730926

The Pilot - Friend or Foe
Smile - Laugh or Die / The Curse of Grief / Defense of the Vardy
Thin Ice - What Lies Beneath / Beneath the Surface
Knock Knock - The Landlord's Curse
Oxygen - Dead Men Walking
Extremis - Mindgame
The Pyramid at the End of the World - Endgame
The Lie of the Land - Aftergame (To reverse the fortunes of the previous game)
Empress of Mars - Lady of the Red Planet (play-on of Lords of the Red Planet)
The Eaters of Light - The Lost Legion
World Enough and Time - Genesis of the Cybermen
The Doctor Falls - The Final Game
>>
>>83733070
Mainly the missing episodes are a problem - you either wind up skipping big chunks, or sitting through grainy telesnap recons
>>
>>83733070
if you watch like 3 hours of doctor who a day you're still gonna be watching for about 10 months. plus the earlier episodes really aren't that great.
>>
>>83733070
It's not autistic to watch something old. I love classic who, I was saying, slightly in jest, that if you decided to get into Doctor Who and decided the best way to go about that was to start at An Unearthly Child and watch everything from the beginning would be pretty autistic.

Yes I'm saying it's autistic to start from the beginning of this 54 year old show with varying levels of quality and many missing episodes when it isn't technically necessary for the enjoyment of the show, there are other places to start, and you can always go back and catch up

>>
>>83733070

beacuse old Doctor Who is 90% shit. Most of the time the Doctor get's caught by the bad guys and sits in a room for 20 minutes, then he escapes just to get caught for the cliffhanger. Repeat for 6 episodes until a shitty practical effect resolves the plot. Everyone besides the Doctor is played by a shitty actor and all external locations are filmed in the same fucking quarry.

People on 4chan are contrarians, so they will try to deny it, but the simple fact is that old-Who was soap-opera tier and it's a miracle that any episodes are watchable.

That's why you would have to be autistic to enjoy watching the same quarry and corridor over and over again for a thousand episodes.

I was just thinking that. He didn't even bother to at least try and make it older. It's literally Tennant exaggerating his accent slightly.
The kids too, it's just the adult voice actors doing their normal voices. I like everyone involved but it doesn't look good
>>
I remember how some Moffat-apologets were saying that 12th's Doctor is consistent and is developed well.

He literally says that fear is good in one episode, and NEXT episode he says fear is bad. Sometimes he is straight-up grumpy grandpa (like Robot of Sherwood) and literally next episode he's some sort of dark hero.
Series 9 and 10 Doctor are different people again.

Just watched Journey to the Center of the Earth. Honestly I expected it to pretty similar to At the Earth's Core, because, well... But actually Journey to the Center of the Earth is a great movie and makes At the Earth's Core look like crap. It's also nothing like anything in Who, because there are monsters, but they don't show up until 3/4 of the way through and are really a small and incidental part of the story. What really makes it work are the characters and their developing relationships as they go on this journey, but I'll be amazed if any of Gatiss's Victorian soldiers have an ounce of that. The most we'll probably get is some infighting between them.

Cultbox's ''spoiler-free'' review actually gives away a tidbit or two about the episode's conclusion

http://www.cultbox.co.uk/reviews/episodes/doctor-who-series-10-episode-9-review-empress-of-mars-spoiler-free

>Speaking of ends, there is a very nice little cameo toward the end that longtime fans will enjoy immensely, but the very ending of the episode is a strange moment. One which may hint at how ‘different’ The Doctor’s regeneration is going to be, or how the series finale might shape out, but is so ambiguous that it feels like a limp finish that ‘Empress of Mars’ doesn’t deserve. Ok how about this

The Ice Warriors is important for basic gestalt. Watch Seeds of Death if you want, but if I were you I'd not watch Curse/Monster of Peladon. They're good, don't get me wrong (well, Curse is good, Monster kind of sucks) but they're a bit hard-on-the-nose with what they're trying to be an allegory to (Peladon is about to enter the Space EU and Monster is them sort of going "we've been fucked since we joined")

I just realized The Empress of Mars could be a bit of a prequel to Cold War, since that episode showed the Ice Warriors alive and active in the 20th century, just not on Mars, and this one will apparently have them waking up from hibernation.

That's it. That is the gosh darnn straw that broke the frankly patient camel's back. You choose to come in here, a place where we have poured hours of our lives into watching, analysing, and theorising about one of the, if not THE greatest science fiction fantasy drama world history has ever known. Were it not for the relatively small size of our island nation and its population, Doctor Who would be a world phenomenon that would astound the viewing masses with its intelligence and brilliance. I don't exaggerate when I say it's probable that, were the show to be aired in China it would bring the nation to its knees. And yet, in spite of all that, you choose to come in here, in the midst of our dialogue, and spout your HATEFUL, INCORRECT AND SLANDEROUS WORDS LIKE IT'S NO BIG DEAL! Well guess what mist: it IS a big deal. Bigger than you'll ever know. I can't begin to describe how furious I am at your comments; I was prepared to let them slide the first few times, but this has gone on far too long. You're going to know punishment like you've never known before. I know who you are buddy; my uncle is a high-ranking moderator on this site, and my dad has connections with the police. We're coming for you, and it ain't gonna be pretty. I'll set upon you with instruments you'll wish you'd never see again. Know what a sonic screwdriver is? You'll wish you didn't by the time I'm finished with you. You just sealed your own grave; the only thing you can do for yourself now is run. Run, and pray to whatever Gods are out there that I'll extend some mercy upon you. This is it kid. The worst ordeal of your life, and it begins now.

Bill is the best part of the season. Capaldi tries hard but his acting range is non-existent and he pressures every word to the point nothing actually feels real. In fact the whole thing feels artificial, and some of the art choices are justified only through the show's crappy history, despite the drastically improved budget. There is no good reason for a great many things. Moffat's writing is stale and predictable, but now he's shitting out quotables for wannabe SJWs to make amends for his previous run ins with feminists, so they've started calling him witty again. There is no tone, bar the first ten minutes of last week's episode. Nardole is fucking insipid but inspires surprisingly good dialogue. The episodes either wrap up too soon or they're knotted up in an infinite number of twists. Not to mention the brain damaged audience who think a character going blind and getting his sight back is 'ableist'. It's not really for kids anymore, but at the same time it is, it's just they're at university now.

It's McDonald's toy-tier. It's been fan fiction for years. Leave it a year and try again.

That could purely be because early 60's audiences didn't widely know what static electricity was, so they had to explain it to give context to a scene. Todays public are much better educated, so don't need such menial things explained to them to make a scene make sense.
