What do yinz think about Star Trek Discovery? I thought that trailer was awesome.

Hope it's good. No faith in CBS though.

The streaming service is a terrible idea that will just encourage pirating.

They look like fucking JJtrek. Where are the giant panels covered in knobs and lights? Where's the mid-century modern interior design? Where are the fucking sweaters? We already know exactly what Starfleet vessel interiors and uniforms looked like a decade before TOS, so what fresh hell is this shit?

>I am really hoping they explain what is with the Klingons shown in the trailer. I hope those aren't all of their species and how they all are depicted
IIRC someone said they're Klingons from the era of Kahless.

Which is where death of the author comes in, which was my point.

>>83725364
Hitler was inspiring, though. Just ask pretty much any German between 1933 and 1941-ish.

>>83725391
I don't go there.
>>
>>83725460
>They look like fucking JJtrek.
Yeah, I don't have a problem with that since I'm not autistic. You can't a modern sci-fi show to purposefully make itself look like scrap just because they had no budget in the 60s. I am fine with remodeling the time period's aethetic, it's not like it bothers the TNG period at all. It's never been explored outside of maybe 2 episodes max.
>>
>>83725514
I don't know what death of the author is, and Hitler was inspiring after brainwashing and propaganda. Nothing the Cardassian says as the war criminal is meant to be endearing. He is literally boasting about murdering innocent lives.

Are you just baiting me?

And I really wouldn't care at all if it wasn't shitting directly on established canon, and TOS at that. If they wanted to go the "slick uniforms and holographic monitors" route then why not just set it a hundred years after DS9 and do whatever the fuck they want?
>>
>>83725566
Death of the author basically means that it doesn't matter what the original writer/creator of something meant when he was creating but only what the audience sees in the work.
>>
>>83725599
>shitting on canon
Every series has done that to some degree.

He also was basically an alien puppet planted in Starfleet just to be used at a later time by his creators.
>>
>>83725721
Then why are you even here?
>>
The problem with Discovery is that it looks way too much like JJtrek. You can have a show be reminiscent of the TOS era without looking awful. Its all about simply, slick visuals. JJtrek and Discovery so far look like over-designed messes. IMO, Star Trek Online did a really good job of modernizing TOS era stuff. Everything has the same feel to it, but it all looks much, much better than it did back in the 60's.
>>
>>83725750
As soon as New Bajor fell. they should have fucking closed the wormhole.

As soon as Sisko was named the Emissary of Bajor he should have been given the ultimatum by Star Fleet command. One or the other.
>>
>>83725817
I thought it was the trek general
>>
>>83725837
Closing the wormhole wouldn't be the best economic choice for the Federation though. Dominion was already passing through and literally destroyed two major empires by the time the show ended.
>>
>>83725837
>As soon as Sisko was named the Emissary of Bajor he should have been given the ultimatum by Star Fleet command.

Never thought about that. Despite being warp-capable, isn't Starfleet technically contaminating the culture of Bajor by allowing Sisko to be the Emissary? He should know that his duty as a Starfleet officer should keep him from accepting such high titles, unless he was also Bajoran.
>>
>>83725902
It wasn't like the alien Prophets gave him any choice. Starfleet can look at the whole thing as a first contact situation.
>>
>>83725801
Good point. Section 31 really dropped the ball on that one.

Or perhaps it all went exactly as planned.

Direct results of the dominion wars was all the majors powers minus the Frengi well extremely weakened in the Alpha quadrant. The three biggest threats to the Federation were destroyed. Cardisians, Romulans, and Klingons.

In the end they get Bajor and the wormhole.

The reason for this exercise is beyond my comprehension, except perhaps that humans have a compulsion to keep records and lists and files. So many, in fact, that they have to invent new ways to store them microscopically, otherwise their records would overrun all known civilisation. My own very adequate memory not being good enough for Starfleet, I am pleased to put my voice to this official record of this day:

Are these kinds of thoughts appropriate for a Starfleet log? I don't care. There's no room in justice for loyalty or friendship or love. Justice, as the humans like to say, is blind. I used to believe that. I'm not sure I can anymore.

It will probably geared towards same crowd as Jar Jar movies and it looks like shit, too much lens fucking flares, uniforms look like impractical as fuck, Klingons look like shit.....

They probably lied about it being in the prime timeline and it will destroy continuity of said timeline. It isn't just a visual reboot, it is full reboot.

I'm more exited about pic related.

>I'm really hoping all of the troubling production rumors are false or overblown.
One of the rumors (Alex Kurtzman was fired) was proven false earlier today (he still works on STD and talked about it in an interview).

Now, that's terrible news because Alex Kurtzman is a worthless hack, but it's also good news because it makes those other rumors less trustworthy.
>>
>>83725523
>You can't a modern sci-fi show to purposefully make itself look like scrap just because they had no budget in the 60s.

This meme should die. Most of the old """"low budget"""" scifi shows were anything but that. Star Trek TOS had average budget of $190k per episode, adjusted for inflation it would be bit $1.4 million per episode today. In a time when Hollywood didn't pay insane sums to stars. Second season was bit cheaper at $180k per episode. Third season also had average budget of $180k per episode, but that was actually a major budget cut as US began gradual change from gold standard to floating currency when Star Trek aired and inflation was running rampant.

Since I implied something about other """low budget""" scifi shows. Original Battlestar Galactica pilot was the most expensive episode of a TV show well into 1990's. Budget for feature length pilot episode was around 7 million. Adjusted for inflation, it would 26 million today. As the most expensive TV episode it was surpassed by Voyagers pilot at 23 million dollars burned before it was done, it would be around 38 million today. Scifi shows are generally expensive when it comes to pilot episodes as there needs to be a lot of new custom sets, props, lots of new effect sequences and so on. When Caretaker was shot Paramount knew that they would make money with it, so they sunk a lot of first season production costs into pilot episode budget.

>Fine, it had a decent budget, but it still looks cheap from our view.

I got bit carried away with cumulative inflation, but I generally agree on making show look modern. As a side note here, one low budget scifi show that was actually low budget was Babylon 5. Star Trek has had arguable number of visual reboots. TMP, TWOK, Enterprise and Jar Jar movies.

STD's uniforms are a mess. Those barely do what uniforms are supposed to do. Color differences between service branches are hard to identify as bronze and gold look awfully similar. Rank insignia on as tiny metallic pips on a fucking shiny metal badge. There is a reason why rank insignia in uniforms is how it is in real life. To identify ranks at quick glance and still remain subdued enough that enemy sniper doesn't easily see it few hundred yards away.

One very few things Jar Jar did right was uniforms, those fit into continuity and even make nod to admirals uniform Kirk had in TMP.

Bridge is supposed to look functional and futuristic, yet it is supposed to fit into continuity. They did absolutely right in the Enterprise, they could have built on that and make couple nods into direction of TOS with some colors or something. Bridge on trailer isn't functional, it is too damn dark. Typically CIC in warship is well lit in normal conditions, in battle they may dim lights to bring attention to screens and reduce distractions, not too much people can keep walking around without tripping. Jar Jar made opposite error with his Apple store, you aren't supposed to be blinded by flood lights.

>It isn't a meme that TOS had a smaller budget compared to other shows on cable and if you can honestly look at those sets and say to me that they don't look like garbage then you may be blind.

There wasn't cable TV when TOS was made. Cable TV until deregulation of broadcasting business in 1972 was only providing broadcast coverage for areas where there was poor signal reception, areas with lots of tall buildings, hills and so on. Basically build big antenna on the hill and run cable down to houses.

Sets look fine for mid to late 60's scifi show.

>Things aren't just memes because you disagree with them.

If you are completely ignorant of economics and simply incapable of understanding basic concepts like cumulative inflation. Picture kinda related. It was the most expensive car in the world when TOS was being made. It was the method of transportation for unelected heads of state and genocidal maniacs. Baseline price tag was mind boggling $24,000 in mid 60's.

You need to honestly relax. I am still going to think TOS looks like shit and it would look tacky as fuck to do a complete authentic remake of the sets in 2017.
