but the real reason is they needed to give yuri and golem some crossbows and this was one of the most creative and well done ways they could have done it. that shot where the hunters walk over to the hat, and the father bends down and yuri is between them, then it cuts to him with a crossbow was great. no need for an ambush or a fight scene or anything like that

All seasons are basically equal in quality, with different strengths and weaknesses.
Season 1 has the strongest start, but slows down mid-way and sort of meanders a bit between the beginning and end.
Season 2 has a weak start and takes about three episodes to pick up, but once it does it doesn't stop. Best characters too.
Season 3 takes longer to pick up, but it keeps you guessing about what happens next. It's sort of like season 2 in that it's about something bigger than just a simple criminal misunderstanding, but it's like season 1 in trying to stay true to the themes of the film.
The film is pretty good, I suggest watching it first. Season 1 is the most like the film, but all seasons have allusions and themes to other Coen works.
