Convoluted plot

S1 worked so well because it highly developed a small group of characters working on a fairly straightforward mystery.

script felt rushed and full of unnecessary characters like the gay cop. It also lacked the top notch production quality of the first season.

Convoluted plots are a staple of the noir genre, so I'm really not concerned about that. But the point of convoluted plots are that it leads the hard-boiled protagonists to have witty dialogue with interesting characters in varied settings. However the dialogue is just terrible, only two of the protagonists are very interesting (Vince Vaughn would probably be great if we didn't focus on him so damn much) and I don't remember anything about any side characters. S2 has the appearance of a gritty (neo-)noir story, but it doesn't understand what makes the genre appealing.

Most of the acting was total shit, particularly the side characters.

Compare Charlie from S1 to characters like The Mayor.

They could have taken out pretty much the whole Rachel macadamia dad/sister part and streamlined the season or dedicate more time to other more important things. But instead we got a whole episode worth of pointless shit like Vince Vaughn staring at the ceiling because he can't have a kid and Rachel visiting a hippie convent to find some obscure solution to a minor problem.
Also the gay cop blackmail stuff was stupid as hell and I hated Colin Ferrell character. His son was the best part of the season

It was good, in some ways better than S1, but there was a lot going on, a few too many arcs and trivial scenes. S1 was a 9/10, S2 an 8/10 or at least a hard 7.

The 'Do you wanna watch friends?' scene was hysterical. Horrific casting.

I'd argue s2 was pretty good, had some good characters and memorable scenes Vince Vaughn hallucinating as he dies, Colin Farrell getting absolutely fucked up, gay cop.

But it was an absolute mess. Not a good mess like Fleetwood Mac's Tusk but a mess like Terrence Malick's output this century. Too many characters, too many aimless subplots, having no central theme or mission for the characters, Rachel McAdams.

Did spawn Vinceposting. Which was a funny meme that still pops up every now and again.

S1 is some of the best TV ever made. S2 doesn't even come close.
