I've never seen this movie and I'm aware that it's beloved but I've literally never heard it be talked about either on this board or in "greatest films of alltime" lists or anything


It's one of the few classic movies that I don't know any quotes or a basic outline of the plot. What gives?

i'm no expert on the topic, but if i had to guess, it's because the original 2 hour version released to theaters is godawful, and the 4hr15m cut that's currently the longest available still leaves 45 minutes of material that Leone considered essential to the film out, simply because it's been lost. it's basically unfinished.

Leone's finest Kino. Even with un-polished added scenes sprinkled in, it's still a finer film than Once upon a time in America.
