Do you prefer the original ending or the modified final release ending?

I understand the message of the original, but Rick Moranis's character is too lovable to do that to him, if they had a differnt actor play the part I think it could've worked
>>
The downer ending kind of fucks up the vibe of the rest of the movie, but I will concede that it's more in the spirit of the original Corman version.
>>
>>83679491
Unfaithful. Not as compelling. Seymour didn't deserve a happy ending, it betrays the point of the entire film.
>>
The only ending I watched was the one where everyone fucking dies.
There's a happy ending?
>>
>>83680383
All versions but the directors cut are the modified happy ending
>>
>>83679491
I was insanely obsessed with the play (and the movie) during my teenage years. Like, every single one of my teenage years.

The problem isn't that Rick Moranis' character is sympathetic. In fact, I prefer that Seymour be played as sympathetically as possible. The issue is that the final cut softens the murders so that he feels less culpable. The Director's Cut was edited together without Frank Oz's involvement, and he's made enough movies anyway that he doesn't even remember all the stuff he changed during production, so the Director's Cut, as released, just includes the ending and not any of the other stuff that was cut or altered. Heck, the finale wasn't even supposed to go on for as long as it does in the Director's Cut. Don't Feed the Plants was supposed to be two and a half minutes long. Kurt Galvao, who restored the set, claims he used the original screenplay and director's notes, but it's pretty clear he just matched the original negatives to the black-and-white workprint that was (briefly) on DVD in the late 90's.

The best possible version of the movie would be a fan edit that shortens Don't Feed the Plants, incorporates The Meek Shall Inherit and uses this version of Mushnik's death.

Little Shop of Horrors is one of my favorite movies and I prefer the theatrical ending, even though it's rushed.
The original ending may work in the show, but it didn't fit this adaptation, Audrey's death is executed poorly executed too.
>>
I only watched it a couple weeks ago (along with other Moranis-centric movies I never watched as a kid, like Spaceballs, Ghostbusters and Honey I Shrunk The Kids), so I can't really say.
The ending I watched had Seymour dying and the world being invaded by massive plants (with cheap special effects to boot).

I'd rank it below Ghostbusters and above Spaceballs. I enjoyed it a lot.

Could you elaborate?

>>
>>83681906
on which part exactly?
>>
>>83679491
I loved the final release ending but the problem with the Director's Cut ending is it went on for way too long.

If the Director's Cut was like the test screening workprint with the fully restored version of The Meek Shall Inherit and Mushnik's death, it would've had the potential of being better.
>>
>>83679491
The original by far. The theatrical ending feels like a complete cop-out if you've watched the original first.
>>
>>83681952
Why you didn't like the ending, particularly how Audrey's death was poorly executed.

>>83683480
Based Tripfag shares the exact same opinion as me.

>>
>>83683570
The theatrical ending was the first one I watched, I later watched the original ending after I watched the original and I loved both versions.

>>83683645
The test screening workprint also had a trimmed-down version of Don't Feed the Plants, but they should've kept the fourth-wall break in the end, the test-screening version cut that out.
The director's cut also had a longer version of Mean Green Mother From Outer Space.
>>
>>83683645
Audrey's death was confusing, I don't remember specifically, but whatever Audrey II did to her didn't seem like enough to kill her.
After I watched the movie for the first time I found a few articles and blog posts from other people that preferred the theatrical ending and it seems like Seymour was more of an asshole in the play, like a whole verse or something was cut out of The Meek Shall Inherit. One of the posts also talked about how the experience of watching a movie and watching a play elicit different emotional responses.

The ideal ending for me would be something that as big as the Director's Cut ending, but with the same or a similar resolution as the theatrical. Maybe they don't get to move out to the suburbs, but Auderey and Seymour alive together, even if they're a little roughed up.
>>
>>83684444
What makes it weird and others have said this is that its not enough to just put in the old ending, you need the circumstances and extended bits of scenes throughout the movie put back in too. If you show Seymore as a reluctant guy the whole movie of course it will be shocking to kill him and audrey off. Add back in the extra bit of "meek" that show him willingly signing contracts and killing people just for audrey, and you realize he knew what he was doing despite it being "out of love"
>>
>>83684524
What exactly was the extra bit of Meek that got cut?
>>
>>83683799 (Nice dubs)
This and You'll Be A Dentist are two of the best songs from this version of the movie.
>>
>>83683863
>The test screening workprint also had a trimmed-down version of Don't Feed the Plants, but they should've kept the fourth-wall break in the end, the test-screening version cut that out.
The director's cut also had a longer version of Mean Green Mother From Outer Space.
Yeah, the Director's Cut's entire last 20 minutes is patterned after a rough cut that was briefly released in 1998 and then available online for over a decade. It was recalled because David Geffen didn't like how unfinished it was.

>>83684444
>and it seems like Seymour was more of an asshole in the play
He's supposed to be a sympathetic murderer. I wouldn't say he was an asshole, but he wasn't supposed to be a hero, except maybe in the tragic sense. Rick Moranis did just fine, but the rewrites muddled the character.

Also, nice quads.

>>83684524
And that's how Kurt Galvao (who did the restoration) fucked up. I'm still not sure whether or not he was given orders to do the cut the exact way he did or if he did it of his own volition. I know that Frank Oz wasn't involved at all, and was just shown the cut after it was done so he could give it his approval and then go on Colbert to plug it.

If you listen to the soundtrack version of the song, theres a second half of the song which is basically Seymore lamenting over all the killings he done and how Mushnik's death was the spur that set him to success. He decides the plant must die to stop the maddness, but before he does he thinks of Audrey and believes she only loves him for the plant ,and thus he has to keep the plant alive for her to continue to love him.
There's a video of this scene on youtube, pretty great, dont know why the DC didnt include it. If they did it would make his death more understandable

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3-IrrrDbOzs

>>83684711
Right, you cant just tack on the old ending and say "look guys heres how it was before!" without the context leading up to it
>>
>>83684755
>>83684758
See, I've been listening to the soundtrack for months now, I didn't even realize none of that was in the movie.
Still, that scene and the entire song doesn't make me hate Seymour, he's still sympathetic to me.

Jesus. Nice dissection. I didn't even know different versions existed, you've memorized the subtle differences and even refer to the fucking workprint.

You're too good for this board. Please leave.

>Audrey's death was confusing, I don't remember specifically, but whatever Audrey II did to her didn't seem like enough to kill her.

He chomped dpwn on her lower torso and she was gushing blood when she was ripped out by seymour. The replaced ending doesn't acknowledge this though since in one scene you see her dress stained in blood but when there outside she's merely roughed up from it all. When I was younger I always found that really confusing which led me to the black and white print and the deleted scenes

I'm sure a porno exists with that title.

How come the movie was such a flop
The songs are great and the puppetry is amazing

Why won't anyone post lyrics from Little Shop of Horrors?

Better wait a minute.
Ya better hold the phone.
Ya better mind your manners.
Better change your tone.

Don't you threaten me son.
You got a lot of gall.
We gonna do things my way.
Or we won't do things at all.

Ya don't know what you're messin' with.
You got no idea.
Ya don't know what you're lookin' at
When you're lookin' here.

Ya don't know what you're up against,
No, no way, no how.
You don't know what you're messin' with,
But I'm gonna tell you now!

Get this straight!
I'm just a mean green mother from outer space
and I'm bad.
I'm just a mean green mother from outer space
and it looks like you been had.
I'm just a mean green mother from outer space,
So get off my back, 'n get out my face,
'Cause I'm mean and green
And I am bad.

I wouldn't doubt there's a XXX parody with that name. Someone search it for me. My google is down for maintenance.
>>
Can someone please give me a quick rundown of each ending? I've only seen the theatrical release where they move out to the suburbs
>>
>>83693196
Theatrical:
Audrey lives, finds out about plant mass production, confronts plant, after struggle Seymour kills the plant, marries the girl, happily ever after, oh shit plant in their garden.

Director's Cut:
Audrey dies, Seymour feeds her to plant, finds out about plant mass production, confronts plant, after struggles Seymour is eaten, plant mass production occurs over a montage, about six minutes of a montage of kaiju plants laughing as they ravage cities, THE END!?!, Plant bursts through movie screen to eat audience.

Wow. That's a major change. Thank you anon for taking the time to reply.

Embarrassment over the lyrics will always be funny. Bump.
>>
I am friggin torn on this movie.

I love love LOVED it as a kid (theatrical ending) and I didn't even know about an alternate end until well into adulthood.

So the alternate ending is WAY TOO LONG for one, though I love me some kaiju tearing up the planetary furniture, having Seymour and Audrey both die is just really depressing, but the mega happy ending loses more than a bit of the narrative theme by having Seymour get away with literal murder.

Maybe as anon:>>83684524 said that with the added bits of Seymour being more accepting of his fate (and trimming the ending down) would make for a tight movie, I still don't think I'd like it to go through all that and have all the characters die with their accomplishments being the destruction of humanity.

Maybe I'm just a sap, but even with everything he did, I want Seymour to at least accomplish SOMETHING in his struggle. Like maybe die saving Audrey and killing the original Twoey, but then plant-pocalypse happens anyway?

>A remake is in development by the Executive Producer of CW's The Flash
>>
>>83694746
I would've wished for an animated remake with the same style as the Disney Renaissance films but a lot darker.
I want this so the remake will be the opposite idea of the live-action remakes that Disney has been making recently.

This makes sense since Alan Menken wrote the songs for Little Shop of Horrors as well as most of the Disney Renaissance films.

It would be even better if Disney actually makes the animated adaptation of Little Shop of Horrors.
They shouldn't tone it down save for maybe retaining the theatrical ending if they wish to do that and it will still be PG-13.
